The best idea is…

December 1st, 2009

Yesterday, at Congress, we ran a twitter contest for delegates to share their best ideas they heard so far. Thanks for your thoughts!

To build on the idea and to create a more lasting record, I’m asking people to share at least one thing they learned.

There are several for me but Dr. Judith Nichols (I’ve been a fan for years) is such an authority in learning us learn about implications of demographics, and translating the target audiences to your fundraising programs. Dynamite!

What were your favourites?

I was very moved by Ron Archer’s address. He deserves accolades for transparency and the courage to talk about his personal history. Life isn’t perfect and neither are people. The courage to make the most of what we have been dealt should be greatly celebrated.

Great conference. I come away with a few key messages for my work. They are imporant ones. Stability is fundable. for instance.

I did’nt like it that two times there was no coffee when I went for it and at the box lunch the water dispenser was allowed to go dry.

“This was the best Congress ever – I found the eleemosynary information from various speakers to be extremely helpful in confronting these challenging times. Whether it was hearing about social media, economic volatility creating a new norm, leadership with new directions or how our world is advancing – the calibre of presentations provided great optimistic thought. Bravo to all those who put so much into the tremendous organizational aspects of making this gathering such a wonderful success.”

This was my first AFP Congress and without question it was an excellent investment of my organization’s money and my time. I am about to head into our agencies and my first fundraising campaign.

I learned alot at each of the workshops and I’m slowly downloading presentations since returning from the Congress.

What came as a complete surprise to me was the generousity of each of the exhibitors that I talked to. They listened to my dilemma (first campaign, not a warm & fuzzy cause, no donor base) and shared their own thoughts about how to build a donor base, how to reframe our cause, and how to organize ourselves from the start….and not necessarily by using their products!

I am heading into the campaign planning phase with alot more confidence and alot more resources than I had before attending AFP Congress. THANK YOU!

The best thing about Congress 2009 was Congress 2009! Simply a first class event with loads of positive energy, valuable knowledge and nice people.

Toronto, you hit a home run!

Thank you for all your attention to the details and making Congress 2009 the best advertisement for Congress 2010.
