Development Officer, The Riverwood Conservancy

Receiving the news that I was the first recipient of the Mo Davies Bursary was a perfect start to my new position as Development Officer of The Riverwood Conservancy (TRC). TRC is a small and vibrant charity located in Riverwood Park in Mississauga and the bursary was a welcomed and valuable gift.

I immediately registered for the Planned Giving seminars at the 2013 Fundraising Day conference, hosted by the AFP Greater Toronto Chapter.  All the seminars at Fundraising Day were delivered by the experts in the field. As a result of attending the conference, I have a clearer understanding of Planned Giving which I will be able to share with our Fund Development Committee as this is an integral part of our fund development strategy to be launched in the fall of this year.

The conference provided me the opportunity to network with seasoned fundraisers. Many were working in health services and organizations serving people of disabilities. I was able to share information about our new TRC Enabling Garden, a fully accessible and programmed garden that offers Therapeutic Horticulture to challenged people of all ages and abilities. Invitations were extended and I am confident that the awareness of TRC and our Enabling Garden will give us the opportunity for future collaborative business ventures. In the meantime, the relationship building and support for my career as a fund development professional has proven invaluable.

The Exhibitor Area at Fundraising Day has also proven to be very useful. I met a vendor specializing in Donor Recognition Walls, who is currently designing a permanent display celebrating TRC donors. I also spoke to a charity database expert, who is in the process of quoting on a new Customer Relationship Management system for TRC as a result of this meeting.

Thank you AFP and Mo Davies for providing this essential gift to new fundraisers. I am indebted to you for this opportunity and plan to continue to learn with AFP to enhance my career in this dynamic field.
