Essentials of Fundraising Program (Cycle 1) - SOLD OUT

January 28, 2008

This program is a series of ten 2.5-hour workshops that will introduce the novice fundraiser to the fundamental concepts and techniques of fundraising.

To receive a certificate upon completion, participants must complete modules one through five (for a total of 25 hours of fundraising training).

All modules will be taught at: The Wellesley Institute, Training Centre, 45 Charles St. E. Suite 101, Toronto, ON

TIME: 5:00 p.m. – 7:30 p.m.

MODULE 1 - Starting a Development Office - January 28 & February 11, 2008

This first course focuses on the information and skills needed to establish an integrated fundraising program. Additionally, this course will provide methods for assessing your institution?s readiness, defining your case, developing resources and establishing basic policies and procedures needed to manage a solid fundraising program. Participants will learn through lectures, practical exercises, and a variety of resource materials.

Following completion of the session participants will understand:

1. The sources of giving in Canada and the primary individual motivations for giving

2. The essential components of an integrated development program

3. The minimum institutional investment needed to plan, develop and implement an integrated development plan

4. Essential roles and responsibilities of board and staff members

Target Audience

Entry-level development officers, staff and board members of nonprofit organisations.

MODULE 2 - Annual Fund - February 25 & March 3, 2008

This course is designed to help you discover core constituencies and turn them into continuous annual donors. Knowing the range of techniques available will help you design a plan and develop strategies to move donors on the path of lifetime commitment to your organization. Participants will learn through lectures, practical exercises, and a variety of resource materials.

Following completion of the session participants will be able to:

1. Identify annual giving as the foundation of any organization’s fundraising plan

2. Recognize annual giving as a way to begin a donor’s lifetime commitment to an organization

3. Know the range of annual giving techniques available and be able to demonstrate skills in them

4. Design an annual giving plan tailored to the needs and resources of their own organization

5. Draw upon a range of materials to help them implement the plan they have designed

MODULE 3 - Grantseeking - March 17 & March 31, 2008 - Register for Module 3

This course will instruct participants on how to fund their unique activities as well as impart effective grant writing and reporting skills. You will also learn how to identify foundations willing to fund your organization. Participants will learn through lectures, practical exercises, and a variety of resource materials.

Following completion of the session participants will be able to:

1. Articulate the differences among various types of corporate and foundation funders

2. Conduct research of funders and match their interests to the needs of the organization

3. Describe the process to develop and present a written proposal

4. Describe the importance of good stewardship in building lasting relationships with corporate and foundation funders

MODULE 4 - Board and Volunteer Development - April 7 & April 14, 2008 - Register for Module 4

The course is designed to show you how to work with and energize volunteers to help your organization raise money efficiently and effectively. Participants also will learn how to recruit the best board and volunteer fundraisers as well as evaluate your current team. Participants will learn through lectures, practical exercises, and a variety of resource materials.

Following completion of the session participants will be able to:

1. Explain the role of the board and volunteers in fundraising

2. Demonstrate how to evaluate the effectiveness of the organization’s board

3. Demonstrate how to develop and use position descriptions in the recruitment process

4. Demonstrate how to identify and recruit board and volunteer fundraisers

5. Describe how to best utilize volunteers in the fundraising process

Target Audience: Entry-level development officers, staff and board members of nonprofit organizations.

MODULE 5 - Individual Major Gifts Fundraising - April 21 & April 28, 2008 - Register for Module 5

This course explains how to engage donors at a deeper level so that their annual giving reaches maximum capacity. It will provide a framework for developing a successful individual major gifts program. Participants will learn through lectures, practical exercises, role-playing and a variety of resource materials.

Following completion of the session participants will be able to:

1. Identify the three major goals of raising individual major gifts

2. Describe the three primary elements providing the foundation to a well-organized individual major gifts fundraising program

3. Identify the primary ways of finding individual major donors

4. Describe the process for developing a major gifts fundraising plan

5. Describe the relationship skills that are part of the cultivation process leading to major gifts

6. Describe the preparation and implementation necessary for securing individual major gifts

7. Describe the tools for evaluating fundraising process and results

Target Audience: Entry-level development officers, staff and board members of nonprofit organizations.

Participation per module qualifies for 5.0 points toward CFRE education requirements.
