The Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) - the largest mental health and addiction facility in Canada, and a teaching hospital fully affiliated with the University of Toronto - works to create a better life for the one in four Canadians whose lives are affected by mental illness and addiction.

The CAMH Foundation exists to raise funds in support of CAMH, with a vision to mobilize and inspire unprecedented generosity and philanthropic leadership for CAMH. To this end, the CAMH Foundation is seeking a Senior Development Officer, Major Gifts to join its seasoned team of fundraising professionals and volunteer leaders.

The CAMH Foundation is currently implementing the $100 million Transforming Lives Campaign to redevelop and revitalize 27 acres in downtown Toronto – the site of the new CAMH.

The Senior Development Officer, Major Gifts, will be an integral part of the Foundation’s highly motivated, creative and results-oriented team, having a university degree or equivalent experience plus five (5) to seven (7) years experience in fundraising, including solicitation of five to seven figure gifts from individuals, corporations, foundations and/or service organizations. Experience in a healthcare environment in addition to campaign experience will be considered an asset. Strategic thinking, effective communication, and personal relationship building are core strengths for this position. You will report to the Vice President, Major Gifts, and work closely with the CAMH Foundation’s President & CEO, Major Gift team members and volunteer leadership to achieve fundraising goals and objectives.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership support to assigned campaign division volunteers and committees in Transforming Lives capital campaign.
  • Identify, cultivate and solicit, through the assistance of key volunteers, a portfolio of corporate, foundation, and individual prospects.
  • Conduct solicitation assignments, where appropriate, personally and in tandem with senior staff and volunteers.
  • Provide excellence in stewardship activities.
  • Prepare proposals, briefing notes and other documents in support of the cultivation/solicitation and stewardship of donors and prospects.
  • Provide excellence in volunteer management and support.
  • Remain conversant in business and personal activities that affect corporate, foundation and individual donors and prospects.
  • Develop fundraising action plans and identify new opportunities to increase revenue in partnership with the Vice President.
  • Monitor revenue and budgets in order to achieve revenue goals.
  • Provide staff support for related fundraising committees.
  • Liaise with CAMH staff and program teams.
  • Maintain membership and provide leadership in appropriate philanthropic associations.
  • Maintain up to date knowledge and expertise in all aspects of legislation affecting philanthropy.
  • Provide regular reports to management and relevant committees with information on all revenue and statistical aspects of work.
  • Maintain a high degree of motivation and superior work ethic consistent with the employment philosophy of the Foundation.
  • Participate actively as a team member of the Foundation.
  • Other development duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Position Qualifications

Minimum Education Required: Post-secondary education, university degree preferred.

Previous Work Related Experience Required: Minimum five years of experience in a fundraising environment, with a proven track record in major giving and volunteer management. The successful candidate will have sound knowledge of donor stewardship and fundraising principles. Capital Campaign experience is considered an asset.

Special Skill/Aptitudes Required: Sound understanding of fundraising principles. Excellent interpersonal, organizational and communication skills required. Must have a strong understanding of donor stewardship fundamentals and be able to communicate in a tactful and professional manner. Must be able to multi-task and work to deadlines. Confidence is essential. Must have experience using word processing, internet, database and spreadsheet software. Knowledge of Raiser's Edge database is preferred.
