Founded in 1987, the Canadian Foundation for AIDS Research (CANFAR) is the only charitable organization in Canada dedicated to funding research into all aspects of HIV infection and AIDS. Over the past 20 years, CANFAR has granted over $14 million to HIV/AIDS research projects across Canada and around the world.

Reporting to the President of the Board of Directors, you will be responsible for leading CANFAR’s operations and fulfilling the vision of excellence and growth. This includes creating and implementing an annual strategic plan to reflect the Board’s direction and an annual business plan and budget. You will be responsible for leading a broad-based philanthropic fundraising organization, including individual giving (direct and major gifts) and corporate giving programs, corporate marketing and development of new, innovative fundraising programs. You will also be responsible for overseeing all fundraising events and programs which include: Bloor Street Entertains, CANFAR’s signature gala event which has won Event of the Year through the Canadian Event Industry Awards; AIDSbeat, a Toronto-based battle of the bands featuring law firms citywide; CANFAR’s national awareness programs including Have a Heart and CANFAR Clubs, high school and university-based fundraising and awareness programs; and Spring-For-Life, CANFAR’s annual major flower sales event to promote awareness
You will be managing CANFAR’s staff of 8 full-time professionals, several seasonal employees, and dozens of volunteers.
Job Responsibilities:
- To work closely with the President of the Board of Directors and to liaise with the Board of Directors to ensure CANFAR’s adherence to its strategic plan and governance responsibilities;
- To be responsible for all financial administration and reporting including budget management and compliance with all CRA regulations and statutory requirements;
- To manage, motivate and evaluate the staff;
- To develop and maintain strategic relationships with all key stakeholders;
- To seek new ways to sustain and expand the fundraising and marketing capacity of the organization
- To manage the Research Grant Program and meetings of the Scientific Advisory Committee;
- To create, where appropriate, productive linkages with government funding entities and with HIV/AIDS related research organizations;
- To act as a key public spokesperson on CANFAR’s behalf.
Skills and Experience:
- Demonstrated track record of management and organizational leadership
- Superior time management, verbal and written communication, decision making, presentation, interpersonal and organizational skills;
- Experience with a broad range of fundraising activities and development programs, including major gift solicitation, direct fundraising, corporate and foundation giving;
- Ability to think strategically and creatively;
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, team-oriented and entrepreneurial environment;
- Ability to lead in an environment that is experiencing rapid growth and change;
- Ability to marshal resources and keep within the constraints of a budget; and
- Bilingualism is an asset.

- Affinity to the HIV/AIDS cause.
Education and Certification:
- University degree(s) or College Diploma; and
- CFRE certification (preferred, but not a prerequisite).
