Dr. Barry and Honey Sherman

The Sherman Family have become known as one of the most active philanthropic families in Canada. There are few charities, especially in the health care field, that they do not support.

In 1974, Dr. Barry Sherman founded Apotex Inc. a manufacturer of generic prescription drugs. In the twenty years since, Apotex has grown into the largest Canadian owned pharmaceutical manufacturer and now has worldwide operations. Along with growth of the corporation, the Shermans feel there should be a commitment to give back to the community in which they live and do business. To assist them with this goal, the Apotex Foundation was established in 1984 to coordinate charitable support for medical and pharmacy research, health care facilities and community causes in Canada and the United States.

Honey Sherman's community involvement includes membership on the Boards of Mount Sinai Hospital, Baycrest Centre, and United Jewish Appeal. Dr. Sherman's service to the community includes his membership on the National Executive of The canadian Society for the Weizmann Institute of Science and its International Board of Governors, Mount Sinai Hospital, Baycrest Centre and the United Jewish Appeal.

The Shermans contribution also include founding the Apotex Theatre at North York's Ford Centre for the Performing Arts and a $6 million commitment to Baycrest Centre's new Jewish Home for the Aged. Most recently, they have added to their founders gift, and have made a $1 million cash donation to United Way's Endowment, the Tomorrow Fund. The Sherman Family exemplify the true spirit of caring in our community. Their generosity, volunteerism and support will always be remembered by the many people whose lives they have touched.
