AFP Response to Hospital for SickKids Foundation Media Coverage

October 6, 2009

Dear AFP members:

We know many of you are following the recent story regarding the Hospital for SickKids Foundation and the compensation package received by its recently departed CEO. Needless to say AFP Greater Toronto Area Chapter has had numerous inquiries about the situation.

We applaud the foundation for its transparency and its willingness to be up front about the issue and its response.

Compensation is an issue that must be addressed by each individual organization, based on geography, subsector, experience, past performance and countless other factors. It is quite likely that the Hospital for Sick Kids Foundation used a consulting firm to compare salaries and develop an appropriate package, as do many large nonprofits across North America. It should also be noted that incentives for reaching management or fundraising goals are not uncommon and are not unethical—so long as they are not based on a percentage of the funds raised.

The compensation package for CEO's of Foundation’s are the purview of their Boards, and it would be inappropriate for comment on any one individual's compensation package.

Thank you for your interest and support.
