THE OPPORTUNITY

Located in Chatham, the Foundation of Chatham-Kent Health Alliance (Foundation of CKHA) is seeking a new Executive Director to bring strategic direction and focus for the Foundation in partnership with the Chatham-Kent Health Alliance’s new leadership and vision. As the Foundation’s Chief Fundraiser, the Executive Director will build and strengthen donor relationships in our community and ensure the achievement of our financial objectives. This role will provide aspirational leadership and talent management to our professional team and direct the operations of our Foundation. 

The Executive Director will report to Foundation of CKHA’s Board of Directors and will work closely with the President and Chief Executive Officer of the Chatham-Kent Health Alliance, as well as the Hospital’s administrative and clinical leadership. As a member of the Hospital’s Senior Management Team, the new Executive Director will establish critical linkages between the Foundation and Hospital.

ABOUT THE FOUNDATION OF CHATHAM-KENT HEALTH ALLIANCE

Since its inception in 1998, the Foundation of Chatham-Kent Health Alliance has led activities formerly carried out by the Public General Hospital, St. Joseph’s Hospital and Sydenham District Hospital Foundations. The Foundation exists to enhance the quality of healthcare available to the citizens of Chatham-Kent by raising funds and providing other resources to support CKHA. To date, Foundation of CKHA has raised over $42 million through annual campaigns, capital and endowment campaigns, memorial and planned giving programs, and special events.

Over the years, the Foundation has successfully completed the following campaigns:

  • October 2003: $20 million – Your Health, Your Future Capital Campaign
  • March 2005: $1.7 million – The Future’s In Sight Ophthalmology Campaign
  • June 2007: $2.7 million – Every Life Counts Chatham-Kent Physician Recruitment Fundraising Campaign
  • December 2009: $3.5 million – Making the Right Investment MRI Campaign
  • March 2013: $1 million – Cardiac Monitoring System Campaign
  • December 2013: $500,000 – CKHA X-Ray Equipment Campaign (for the Sydenham Campus)
  • Launched in late 2014 and still on-going: $6.9 million – Future in Focus Diagnostic Imaging Equipment Renewal Campaign ($4.4 million raised to date)

Through these capital fundraising initiatives, and ongoing capital campaign achievements, residents of Chatham-Kent have the ability to access leading-edge healthcare delivered within local modern facilities by highly-trained professionals. Generous contributions to the Foundation allow the Chatham-Kent Health Alliance to provide patients, and their loved ones, with the best possible quality healthcare at both the Chatham and Sydenham Campuses. Over the years, contributions have helped to maintain and improve hospital equipment and facilities, support specific projects, programs and services and meet CKHA’s most urgent capital equipment needs.

With a donor-centric and relationship-building focus, the Executive Director will be finely attuned to the nuances of healthcare in our unique community. As the Foundation’s chief fundraising professional, the successful candidate will play a lead role in the cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of key donors.  The new incumbent will also actively promote an internal culture of philanthropy at CKHA, and will nurture relationships within the Hospital as well as among the broader Chatham-Kent community to identify and support external ambassadors and key influencers.

Able to operate within large scale organizational complexities while managing in a small office environment, the Executive Director will be a sophisticated and accomplished leader, fundraiser, coach, and administrator. Well organized and with sound business and financial judgment, the ideal candidate will effectively set priorities, develop work schedules, monitor progress towards goals, and track all information and activities.

Confident and credible, the new Executive Director will provide excellent support, motivation and partnership to, and foster trust and mutual respect within Foundation of CKHA’s Board of Directors and CKHA’s leadership team. The new incumbent will also serve as a guide, mentor and sounding board for our lead volunteers. Motivated and achievement oriented, the successful candidate will set clear expectations of all stakeholders in realizing the vision and goals of the Foundation and the Chatham-Kent Health Alliance.

 

KEY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Reporting to the Foundation’s Board of Directors through the Chair, the Executive Director is responsible for the overall vision, leadership, management, and operation of our Foundation. While specific objectives and accountabilities for this role are to be shaped and determined by the Board Chair and the new Executive Director, in consultation with the Board, the key areas of responsibility will include: 

Strategic and Operational Leadership

  • In partnership with the Foundation of CKHA Board and CKHA hospital leadership, determine a strategic direction and focus forward for the Foundation;
  • Raise the profile of Foundation of CKHA and ensure net revenues are realized by maximizing the organizational capacity of the Foundation, and CKHA resources;
  • Working with the broader Foundation of CKHA and CKHA teams, ensure full integration and coordination of programs to leverage donor engagement and fundraising results;
  • Plan and execute operational plans for all philanthropic revenue streams, and develop benchmarks to measure and monitor performance against these plans;
  • Determine appropriate goals, targets and metrics to ensure that all philanthropic fundraising efforts are effective, efficient, and successful;
  • Monitor and report on the progress towards these goals and targets, and on the activity and results of fundraising programs, initiatives, and staff;
  • Oversee the development and preparation of Foundation of CKHA’s annual budget for Board approval;
  • Serve as a member of the Senior Management Team of the Chatham-Kent Health Alliance;
  • Collaborate closely with CKHA’s President and Chief Executive Officer and administrative and clinical leadership to ensure that community health priorities and objectives are realized;
  • Ensure Foundation of CKHA’s compliance with legal, regulatory, and ethical standards;
  • Maintain relationships with other healthcare philanthropy professionals to ensure ongoing knowledge of best practices and to benchmark Foundation of CKHA’s performance;
  • Ensure strategic monitoring of best practices in the sector and contribute to their implementation within the Foundation.

Fundraising Management

  • Develop fundraising strategies and plans that ensure continuous achievement of Foundation of CKHA’s mission and financial objectives;
  • Oversee the creation and execution of an on-going comprehensive plan for revenue growth to support CKHA’s priorities, and work with the Foundation Board and the Hospital’s management team to modify the plan as needed moving forward;
  • In collaboration with Foundation of CKHA Development Team and at times in partnership with Foundation of CKHA’s key stakeholders, establish activity and revenue goals, targets and metrics to ensure that all philanthropic fundraising efforts are effective, efficient, and successful;
  • Personally assume responsibility for relationship development, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of a portfolio of key major gift prospects, including individuals, corporations and organizations, and foundations;
  • Manage the development of a robust pipeline of prospective donors who will be key to Foundation of CKHA’s fundraising success.

Communications and Donor Relations

  • Work closely with CKHA leadership and Foundation of CKHA’s broader Development Team to translate CKHA’s priorities into compelling donor opportunities that positively impact the Hospital and the community;
  • Develop effective strategies for donor recognition, stewardship, and engagement to ensure effective donor relations are implemented across all donor levels;
  • In close partnership and collaboration with the Hospital administration, ensure the realization of projects, development activities, communications and external relations that contribute to the achievement of Foundation of CKHA’s objectives;
  • In collaboration with the Director of Development, develop a strategic communications plan for the Foundation that maximizes the use of communication vehicles to highlight both community health needs and donor impact;
  • Collaborate with CKHA’s Communications colleagues in the development of key communication materials to support philanthropy and stewardship activities, and to ensure alignment on all key messages;
  • Actively promote community awareness of the Hospital and Foundation’s goals and objectives, with the intention of broadening the level of understanding of and support for the Hospital;
  • Engage with Board Members and other volunteers to create specific strategies that broaden awareness of the Foundation and increase engagement with each of the distinct communities served by CKHA;
  • Serve as the Foundation’s lead spokesperson to media, the public, donors and other stakeholders, thus ensuring a clear, consistent message in all communications.

Community Relationship Building

  • Maintain ongoing positive relationships with new and existing donors, volunteers, and community members;
  • Actively develop and maintain effective working relationships with physician, clinicians, and staff within CKHA;
  • Identify key physicians, clinicians, and senior staff to act as Foundation ambassadors and to help develop key donor relationships;
  • Identify opportunities for, and participate in, activities with CKHA that help to build awareness of the Foundation, the Hospital and to foster a culture of philanthropy.

Team Leadership

  • Ensure that Foundation of CKHA’s mix of fundraising activities and team capacity are appropriately balanced to support the strategic goals of the Foundation, and to ensure effective and efficient use of financial, staff, and volunteer resources;
  • Offer ongoing mentoring, coaching and encouragement to the Foundation of CKHA team;
  • Engage every member of the team in working collaboratively towards the integration of programs and activities in support of overall collective goals;
  • Encourage team members to combine best practices with creativity and new ways of approaching problems and opportunities;
  • In collaboration with Foundation of CKHA staff, develop and achieve professional and performance goals, targets, and metrics for their programs and revenue streams, including both individual and team accountabilities and goals;
  • Manage the recruitment and retention of Foundation of CKHA staff including hiring, performance management, accountability and annual reviews, and professional development;
  • Model of the values, attitude, work ethic, and behaviours expected of all Foundation of CKHA staff;
  • Create an environment in which staff are supported, enabled, and empowered to deliver excellence and reach their full potential through creativity, collaboration and cross-functionality;
  • Partner with CKHA Human Resource professionals to ensure that appropriate human resources management policies and processes are developed, implemented, and modified as needed.

Board and Volunteer Support

  • In partnership with Foundation of CKHA’s Board of Directors, develop a strategic recruitment engagement plan for the Board and other key volunteers who contribute to the Foundation’s development activities;
  • Collaborate with the Board to develop and deliver appropriate education, communication, and training to provide support to, and assist Foundation Board members in, fulfilling their commitments and governance duties to both Foundation of CKHA and ultimately to CKHA, and creating a metrics to measure results;
  • Work closely with the Foundation Board to increase their involvement in, and comfort with, prospect identification, cultivation and solicitation activities;
  • Ensure that conversations about philanthropy commence at recruitment of Board members;
  • Provide support, guidance, training, and partnership to Foundation Board members, volunteers and hospital staff who serve as partners in fundraising activities;
  • Attend all Board meetings and present on a regular basis to various committees and groups involved with the Foundation.

 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS

  • Relevant charitable sector experience in a significant fundraising or management leadership role.
  • Proven successful fundraising and community engagement experience and strong knowledge of best practices and emerging trends, in particular in the major and planned giving areas.
  • Strong knowledge of standard fundraising techniques through all aspects of the donor cycle.
  • Expertise in Board relations and governance practices.
  • Exceptional relationship-building and networking skills.
  • Empathic awareness of and sensitivity to the growing diversity represented in the region.
  • Exhibits the highest standards of personal responsibility and accountability as an ambassador and champion of the Foundation and the Hospital.
  • Effective and transparent communication skills, and an ability to inspire others through conversations, presentations, and writing.
  • Strong knowledge of financial, legal and regulatory requirements of a non-profit organization.
  • Experience setting and delivering on strategic and financial goals.
  • Ability to work in an environment with complex multi-layered accountability frameworks.
  • Experience working within the health care sector would be considered a decided asset.
  • Availability for occasional travel as well as occasional work on evenings and weekends.
  • Post-secondary education, or equivalent is preferred, and CFRE designation is a preferred asset. 
  • Membership in the Canadian Association of Gift Planners, the Association of Fundraising Professionals, and/or the Association of Health Care Philanthropy would be an asset.
  • While residency in Chatham-Kent is not required for candidates, the Foundation and its stakeholders hope that its new Executive Director will choose to live in one of the vibrant communities which the Chatham-Kent Health Alliance serves.
