Job Description

The energetic team at the Cambridge Memorial Hospital Foundation (CMHF) is responsible for raising funds in support of the Cambridge Memorial Hospital. Over the past 5 years, the Foundation has raised nearly 80% of the funding associated with a major redevelopment at the hospital. The last 20% ($10M) awaits and the Foundation is seeking an incredible visionary leader committed to moving the organization forward to achieve this goal and to elevate the performance of the Foundation to a new level.

As a key member of the Foundation team the Development Officer, Special Events is responsible and accountable for the development, execution, and growth of CMHF’s event programs. The goal is to maximize revenue by building and fostering relationships and optimizing efficiencies and effectiveness. The Development Officer, Special Events is responsible for overseeing all aspects of the Foundation’s Signature events program including planning, budgeting, communications, event volunteer management and evaluation. A focus of this role is also on relationship building/management, stewardship and partnership development with external stakeholders.

The Development Officer, Special Events will work in conjunction with the Executive Director to recruit and develop committee volunteers along with strategies to ensure revenue growth, innovation and sustainability of the events program.

Recruitment and development of Committee volunteers is essential to achieve goals                                                         

  • Develop and execute yearly business and marketing plans for the Signature Events Program
  • Develop budgets (in collaboration with the Development Team); monitor program revenues and expenses to ensure they remain within budget and make recommendations for changes when necessary
  • Responsible for all aspects of event coordination, logistics, on-site execution, supplier relationships, marketing support, committee meeting communication and preparation, updating Raiser’s Edge, post-event stewardship and thank you, etc.
  • Develop creative and custom on-site sponsorship opportunities, and unique guest experiences
  • Negotiate with suppliers and prepare contracts for event-related services including event space, food and beverage requirements and audiovisual equipment within approved budget
  • Manage the development and growth of the Signature Events Program to increase revenue, and evaluate effectiveness to make recommendations for improvements
  • In collaboration with the Communications Specialist, develop impactful event concept and creative that stand out in the marketplace
  • Manage the development and implementation of all marketing material for special events including event promotional package and video, sponsorship material, PowerPoints, evening programs, etc.
  • Oversee the development of marketing materials internally or externally with designated suppliers
  • In collaboration with the Development Team, develop new, compelling and customized sponsorship opportunities and benefits unique to each event property
  • Ensure that systems and processes are in place to provide superior customer service to both internal and external stakeholders including participants/attendees, sponsors, suppliers, volunteers and staff
  • Recruitment and development of committee volunteers is essential to plan, execute and secure ongoing sponsorships                                                           
  • In collaboration with ED and development team to develop objectives, strategies and metrics that ensure continued growth and innovation of the annual events program
  • Work with the ED and Program Strategy Committee on the assessment of the current event portfolio, development of new opportunities to ensure long term revenue growth and sustainability
  • Work with any consultants as required to assess current event portfolio, explore new signature event opportunities, and strategic recommendations for future sustainability
  • Develop, manage and execute new event concepts that build momentum, interest and support for the hospital; adhering to high standards of excellence required of all events and activities of the Foundation  
  • In collaboration with the Communications Specialist to develop impactful event marketing materials

  • Ensure that systems and processes are in place to provide superior customer service to both internal and external stakeholders including participants/attendees, sponsors, suppliers, volunteers and staff



  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent. Working toward a CFRE designation or membership in AFP an asset
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, verbal and written
  • Excellent administrative skills including solid working experience using relevant technology such as Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, the Internet and fundraising software
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities from different sources enhanced by problem solving capabilities
  • Strong customer service oriented approach complemented by excellent organizational and time management abilities
  • Ability to use sound judgment and maintain discretion and confidentiality at all times
  • A valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle required
  • Ability to multitask and use good judgment and decision making during high-level, event-intense implementation periods
  • 3 to 5 years’ progressive experience in the Special Events field with demonstrated success in this area
  • Proven leadership and staff management skills
  • Experience in working with external stakeholders/vendors in negotiating costs to align with the approved budget and to ensure overall goal is met.
  • Experience in motivating and working with senior volunteers
  • Experience using fundraising software such as Raiser’s Edge
  • Demonstrated ability to attend work on a regular basis is required.
