Campaign Director, Major Gifts

The Toronto General & Western Hospital Foundation is currently seeking a Campaign Director, Major Gifts


The Campaign Director will have significant fundraising experience (10+ years). He/she will be part of the team working under the general direction of the Vice-President, Major Gifts. The Campaign Director is responsible for leading the development of the fundraising campaign (with the specific goal of raising $2-5M+ annually) for 1-3 program priorities at UHN including identifying and gaining/enhancing the interest and involvement of individuals who directly, or through other sources, are capable of making gifts at this level.  The Campaign Director is responsible for all aspects of the management and success of the initiatives he/she leads, working closely with active volunteers and the medical leaders. In addition to building relationships and soliciting gifts the Campaign Director also ensures proper stewardship takes place after a gift has been made to maintain the donor’s involvement, interest and support.  Committed to success, goal oriented, and possessing great personal relationship skills the Campaign Director is also comfortable in any setting and sensitive to nuance and making the right approach in each circumstance.



The Campaign Director will develop and implement a program directed towards gaining the financial support of potential donors at a giving level of $100,000 a year and above. This will be accomplished by:

  • Identifying potential sources of major gifts donors from event attendees, friends, patients of the hospital, other individuals, foundations and corporations.

  • Working with members of the major gifts team, the hospital community and volunteers, the Campaign Director develops tailored programs which are designed to gain/enhance the interest and involvement of the prospect in the hospital and research institutions.

  • Overseeing the ongoing identification, monitoring and evaluation of a prospect’s capacity level as well as their readiness to give.

  • In consultation with others involved with a prospect, determines the appropriate timing for solicitation.This is realized by ensuring that canvassers are properly briefed and prepared in advance of any contacts being made. Participates in or leads solicitation calls, as appropriate.

  • Works with communications to prepare written materials including case statements, tailored proposals, correspondence and progress reports and planning documents as appropriate to area of responsibility.

  • Maintains up-to-date knowledge of planned giving vehicles to ensure maximum opportunities presented for gift commitments.

  • Develops career path/performance goals in consultation with the Vice- President, Major Gifts and Director, Major Gifts.

  • Performs cross-functional duties, as assigned.

  • Performs other duties consistent with the job classification, as required.



    Direct: Vice President of Major Gifts

    Indirect: Senior Vice President and CDO and the President, Toronto General and Western Hospital Foundation and Director, Major Gifts          



  • Demonstrated major gift development experience including successfully closing gifts at the $500,000+ level.

  • Ten years involvement in a staff fundraising or leadership role with a proven track record of success.

  • Ability to work in a hectic and results oriented environment.

  • Computer literacy: Microsoft Word, database software and spreadsheet programs, familiarity with Raiser’s Edge an asset.

  • Exceptional personal and communication skills.

  • University degree or equivalent experience.

  • Strong organizational and analytical skills. Evidence of leadership and initiative, tact, diplomacy, attention to detail, creativity.

  • Proven ability to motivate and manage others, i.e., volunteers and staff.



  • Discerns action required to maximize fundraising potential.

  • Establishes own priorities among the numerous responsibilities and projects encompassed by the position.

  • Formulates strategic and tactical plans for prospect cultivation and solicitation and donor recognition in conjunction with senior foundation staff.

  • For each major gift prospect, determines the appropriate involvement of members of the hospital and foundations and volunteers in the cultivation, solicitation and recognition process.



  • Hectic, service and results oriented environment. Significant amount of activity outside the office in meetings with prospects and volunteers.

  • 8:45 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Regular daily hours of work with occasional evenings, and early meetings and evening events.

  • Ability to work cooperatively with colleagues in all positions throughout the Foundation.

  • Shared commitment and support of the overall Foundation goals.
