Summary of Function:

As a key performer for Homes First Foundation, the Marketing & Communications Specialist is responsible for the strategic execution and project management of the annual marketing and communication programs and activities.

The Marketing & Communications Specialist provides oversight for all collateral development, working the with Foundation team, Society staff and outside agencies; creation and execution of digital marketing communications strategy, including social media, and strategic oversight of any advertising or video materials, fund raising and grant proposals, prospect and leadership briefing notes and leadership speaking notes This position reports directly to the Executive Director, Homes First Foundation. 

Core Deliverables:

  • Act as the primary HFF marketing/brand officer by maintaining high-level knowledge of Foundation messaging and brand promise to ensure consistency in style and language across all HFF materials. Ensure HFF brand standards across all marketing projects and initiatives.
  • Create and manage the Foundation’s digital strategy and execution of online marketing, fund raising and communications, including the web site and social media platforms assisted by the communications assistant and Web provider.
  • Bring strategic thinking to and provide energetic and engaging leadership in project management and design of HFF publications and materials: donor stewardship reports, donor newsletter, funding proposals, advertising, brochures, signage, etc.
  • Manage HFF relationships with communication service providers ensuring projects are accurate, engaging, on time and within budget.


Accountabilities & Responsibilities, including but not limited to:

Brand Management

  • Ensure all marketing and communications materials are developed in compliance with HFF brand standards.
  • Maintain high-level knowledge of Foundation messaging and Foundation Business and Marketing Plans to ensure consistency in style and language across all marketing and communications materials.

Digital Strategy Management

  • Manage the development of HFF’s digital strategy and execution of online marketing, fundraising and communications (website, e-communication strategy).with assistance from the communications assistant.
  • Manage all social media platforms for the Foundation, including strategy and daily content development with assistance from the communications assistant.

Budget Management

  • Support the budgeting process for the fiscal year, assisting the HFF Executive Director with detailed budget projections and allocations.
  • Manage HFF relationships with communication service providers ensuring projects are accurate, engaging, on time and within budget.

Marketing & Communications Portfolio Management

  • Follow standardized project management processes for all community engagement & marketing projects (including work back schedules, design (either internally or with freelancers), internal approval processes, electronic organization/filing of portfolio elements, etc.).
  • Work closely with Society and Foundation staff to create standardized HF templates for a wide variety of donor communications (all general collateral such as standardized PP presentations, donor proposals, stewardship reports, etc.).
  • Facilitate the design, production, editing and distribution of HF publications and materials including:  donor stewardship reports, donor newsletter, presentations, funding proposals, brochures, video, photography and signage.
  • Provide creative art direction for photo and video shoots for HFF
  • Manage advertising submissions throughout the year.


Qualifications and Skills:

  • Minimum of two to three years related experience in a not for profit, ideally a campaign or development communications department , or a marketing/agency environment;
  • Minimum university undergraduate degree. Marketing, Communications and/or Not-for Profit related courses an asset;
  • Fully competent in Adobe Design Suite and Online Content Management Systems (CMS)
  • Exceptional communication skills; experience writing for marketing and non-profit purposes;
  • Knowledge of communication production including video, photography, print and online
  • Proven knowledge of general marketing techniques and practices;
  • Project management and leadership experience in similar role or field;
  • Proven experience in managing social channels and managing websites
  • Strong writer, and experience writing  winning funding proposals and grants
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Familiarity with Blackbaud’s Raiser's Edge or other similar donor CRM software an asset;
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, and an ability to multi-task with minimal supervision;
  • Highly organized, accurate and detail-oriented;
  • Ability to work outside of regular business hours, on occasion; and
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with staff, volunteers and external stakeholders in a collegial environment.

Note: this is currently a contract position (3 days per week) with the possibility of becoming FT in the near future.
