Job Description

Toronto General & Western Hospital Foundation (TGWHF) raises funds for research, education and the enhancement of patient care at Toronto General Hospital and Toronto Western Hospital, their respective research arms, the Krembil Research Institute and Toronto General Hospital Research Institute, and the Michener Institute of Education at UHN. The hospitals and institutes are part of University Health Network (UHN), which also includes Princess Margaret Cancer Centre and the Toronto Rehab Institute. UHN is a major landmark in Canada’s healthcare system and a teaching hospital of the University of Toronto. TGWHF is currently seeking a Communications Specialist to provide writing services that will directly support fundraising efforts. The Communications Specialist reports to the VP Marketing, Communications and Community Giving.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Produce (write and lay out/publish) a wide range of fundraising support materials, including donor proposals and stewardship reports, one-pagers and presentations for the major giving audience
  • Writing of donor communications materials such as newsletters, eblasts and event speaking notes
  • Active web content contributor to support TGWHF’s overall communications calendar
  • Strategic consultant and subject matter expert, managing a concentrated portfolio of select hospital program areas
  • Foster strong relationships with TGWHF fundraisers and UHN staff to develop messaging that is on strategy and articulates the mission, vision and fundraising needs of the program(s) – this includes conducting interviews
  • Work within TGWHF brand guidelines and writing style guide to champion the brand, ensuring quality and consistency
  • Collaborate with marketing, digital and design teams (in-house and external suppliers) for special projects as required

REQUIREMENTS

  • Post-secondary degree or diploma in communications, marketing, journalism or similar 

  • 3 – 5 years of experience (part-time or full-time capacity) in a communications role (non-profit and/or healthcare experience, along with experience in proposal development, are preferred)
  • Strategic thinker with ability to break down complex ideas and tell them in compelling, meaningful ways – background in science or medical writing an asset
  • Experience conducting interviews and facilitating conversations to extract and uncover information necessary to develop communications materials
  • Understanding of marketing and communications principles, strategies and tactics
  • Excellent proven written and verbal communications skills 

  • Self-starter with strong organizational and admin skills
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment while managing multiple projects and priorities
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively
  • Meticulous with a commitment to superior quality; thorough knowledge of Canadian Press (CP) and Globe & Mail styles an asset 

  • Excellent skills in applications such as Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint; Adobe InDesign experience preferred

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Busy service- and results-oriented environment, with some activity outside the office for meetings
  • Regular daily hours of work with occasional evenings 

  • Collaborative environment with a shared goal of achieving fundraising success
