Position Summary:

Reporting to the Director, Major Gifts, as a senior member of the Development & Alumni Relations team, the Senior Development Officer, Major Gifts is responsible for the development and implementation of strategies and programs relating to OCAD University’s (OCAD U) fundraising initiatives.

Summary of Responsibilities:

  • Work closely with the Director, Major Gifts in the development and implementation of overall departmental strategic and budget planning processes
  • Develop an integrated fundraising business plan, containing strategies related to individual donors and prospects, foundations and corporate partners, including identification, qualification, cultivation and successful solicitation
  • Meet all campaign revenue goals on an annual basis
  • Establish strategic fundraising priorities in all aspects relating to the Faculty of Design; act as a strategic advisor to the Director, Major Gifts in the area of design and Liberal Arts & Sciences and cultivate a culture of philanthropy within design
  • Develop and manage a portfolio of approximately 100 qualified donors and prospects in conjunction with key external volunteers, including the OCAD U Board of Governors and Ignite Imagination Campaign Cabinet members, identify major prospects, coordinate strategy sessions, develop comprehensive and individualized strategies and coordinate volunteer engagement
  • As a key member on the Development & Alumni Relations team, provide leadership to all team members and support all financial and other goals of the team
  • Work closely with OCAD U faculty and administration to identify needs and opportunities to develop concepts, prepare and present customized written materials, proposals, stewardship reports and correspondence
  • Provide assistance to other University personnel, where appropriate
  • Working with the Manager, Stewardship, actively participate in the on-going management and stewardship of all major donors and implement high quality best-practices
  • Collaborate and work closely with the Sr. Manager, Advancement Events on all donor cultivation and stewardship events
  • Monitor giving trends and devise on-going strategies to successfully build strong relations
  • Provide leadership and guidance to other members of the Development & Alumni Relations team to promote best practices across all portfolios
  • Build strong partnerships and liaise with the Alumni and Annual Giving to jointly work together as a team and move donors into the pool of major gifts
  • Secure assigned and new sponsorship for OCAD U’s key events and manage all sponsorship activation (i.e. Project 31, Graduate Exhibition)
  • Project manage major gift proposals, including research, proposal writing and design
  • Support the Development & Alumni relations team with all events
  • Support the Director, Major Gifts in related duties that contribute to the successful operation of the Major Gifts team


  • Undergraduate degree in a related field, though graduate degree preferable
  • Minimum of five (5) to seven (7) years of senior experience in a higher education or related fundraising environment, or acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience; familiarity with philanthropic community and knowledge of cultural environment desirable
  • Experience in and a passion for the arts, including the ability to articulate the many benefits of the arts to society and communities an asset
  • Excellent oral and written communication, presentation, problem-solving, and project management skills
  • Proven track record of sound strategic planning and ability to meet revenue targets
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize competing demands and meet deadlines
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and participate collaboratively in a team environment
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, and Raiser’s Edge software programs
  • Demonstrated commitment to the principles of diversity and equity, and proven ability to deal effectively with a diverse population
  • Demonstrated ability to build relationships with both internal and external key stakeholders including corporate partners and volunteers
  • Occasional weekend, and evening work required

Compensation: Commensurate with experience

Hours of Work: Monday to Friday; due to the nature of the position, weekends and evenings are required as needed.
