Job Description

The Director of Development & Communications is a senior member of the CMC National team based in Toronto. The area of focus is three-fold: Manage annual fundraising campaigns focusing on individual, corporate, foundation and endowment donations; oversee communication to CMC's national and international stakeholders; and direct the national Associate Composer member campaigns.

This is a full-time position reporting to the President & CEO. The Director supervises a full-time Marketing & Communications Assistant. As a member of the senior management team, the successful candidate will work closely with the national staff, Regional Directors, and volunteer members of the National Board of Directors and the Development Committee.

Primary responsibilities include:

o Identify prospects, solicit support and steward composers, patrons, corporate sponsors, foundations and individual donors
o Strategize, research and prepare funding requests and reports to foundations and corporations
o Support senior staff in preparing and reporting on government grants
o Develop and implement an annual National fundraising campaign
o Provide strategic direction and oversight for regional fundraising activities in conjunction with the Regional Directors
o Cultivate and secure major gifts and endowment contributions
o Oversee stewardship associated with donor levels, major gifts and Permanent Endowments held at the Ontario Arts Foundation

o Direct national marketing and communications strategy, supporting national and regional messaging and dissemination
o Oversee fundraising and promotional communications
o Coordinate internal and external communications between staff and regional offices
o Oversee CMC social networking strategy

o Project coordination: budgeting, planning, management and reporting
o Direct the Associate Composer membership campaign and strategy
o Manage special events & meetings including invitations and logistics
o Coordinate Development Committee meetings; and participate in National Board of Directors and Regional Director’s meetings
o Oversee development and marketing interns and volunteers
o Assist in developing and implementing strategic plans and organizational policies
o Network to ensure an active presence within the local music community


  • Five+ years of experience in non-profit arts administration with an advanced university degree in arts management, communications or equivalent professional practice (MA/MBA/MFA/CFRE)
  • French proficiency (written and oral)
  • Demonstrated success in grant/proposal writing and individual donor appeal
  • Strong computer skills. Experience with Salesforce/Patron Manager a plus
  • Excellent practical understanding of social media
  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to analyze and solve problems, manage deadlines and detail oriented
  • Ability to work independently and in a team setting
  • Interest in and/or music performance experience. Knowledge of Canadian contemporary music a priority
