Manager, Donor Events

ROM Governors

The Royal Ontario Museum (ROM) is one of the most renowned cultural institutions in North America. The ROM showcases art, culture and nature from around the world and across the ages. PRIMARY OBJECTIVE OF POSITION:

The Manager, Donor Events is responsible for providing overall leadership of the day to day operations of the ROM Governors’ fundraising, stewardship and cultivation events.  The Manager devises a strategic office-wide events plan annually that contributes towards donor acquisition, retention, and stewardship objectives.  This role leads major events and ensures staff support of stewardship and cultivation events.  The Manager has one direct report, the Development Associate, Special Events.

KEY RESULT AREAS:

  1. Strategic Planning & Execution:  Develop and manage a comprehensive and well-defined annual and long-term strategic plan for the donor events portfolio including fundraising, cultivation and stewardship events. Lead the integration and tracking of all events in the Governors’ office.  Guide ROM stakeholder strategies for Governors events, list development, and identify and recommend ROM representatives at events.  Oversee all aspects of event production and design for donor events, with the Development Associate.

  2. Revenue Generation & Financial Management:  Responsible for achieving revenue targets for the annual Golf Tournament and bi-annual Ball.  In consultation with VP, Annual Giving, develop event related targets and manage all expenses.  Provide reports on financial progress against the operating budget and on sponsorship and sales solicitations as requested for ROM and ROM Governors Senior Staff.  Provide attendance reports on event attendance to the ROM.

  3. Volunteer Management & Recruitment:  Oversee fundraising event volunteer recruitment and engagement, revenue generation strategies and sales through volunteer contacts, manage volunteer expectations while ensuring ROI, and cultivate and transition event volunteers into long-term ROM supporters.

  4. Internal Relationship Management:  Supervise day-to-day activities of the Development Associate, coaching, mentoring and providing guidance and feedback.  Consult with ROM and ROM Governors leadership on strategy, event briefings, and maintain close collaboration and clear processes with all ROM departments that support Governors events.  Collaborate with the AVP, Communications and Marketing, on specific events supports required.

JOB COMPLEXITIES AND SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED:

This position requires an incumbent possessing a strong background in fundraising with a minimum of five years of experience managing fundraising, cultivation and stewardship events.  Experience managing budgets of $1 million+ and high-level volunteer committees is required. The incumbent must also possess:

  1. Strong financial acumen, results-driven coupled with strong business case analysis and project management skills

  2. Demonstrated experience in table sales and securing cash sponsorships of $10,000+

  3. Specialized knowledge and practice of special event management theory, principles, methods, techniques and best practices

  4. Ability to interpret strategic direction to create innovative and creative events and experiences

  5. Experience in marketing and communications as it relates to event promotion including mail, phone, digital and face-to-face solicitation

  6. Ability to plan, organize and prioritize work, while handling multiple tasks and tight deadlines with poise and diplomacy

  7. Resourcefulness and independence, while remaining comfortable working within the framework of a very collaborative, team-oriented environment

  8. Exceptional interpersonal skills, negotiation skills and professional presence necessary to interact with donors, sponsors, patrons, senior volunteers, senior Museum staff and other stakeholders

  9. Excellent problem-solving skills, strategic aptitude and sound judgment

  10. Exceptional and proven oral and written communication skills

  11. Proficiency in Microsoft Office including Word, Excel and PowerPoint, plus Raiser’s Edge

  12. Knowledge of the marketplace, donor base and understanding of the vision, mission and values of the Museum and role of the ROM Governors

  13. A flexible schedule that allows for multiple after-hours events and meetings
