Southlake Regional Health Centre Foundation is seeking an experienced leader in the exciting new position of Vice President, Major Gifts & Campaign. The Vice President will play a key role in securing transformational and major gifts to encourage and advance significant philanthropic investments in the Southlake Regional Health Centre.

With dynamic new leadership at both the Foundation and the Hospital, this opportunity will appeal to a highly-motivated leader with experience inspiring professional fundraising staff, senior volunteers, and institutional leadership to achieve ambitious fundraising growth.

The Vice President will lead a team of six fundraising professionals, including two Directors of Philanthropy, two Development Officers, a Prospect Researcher, and a Philanthropy Assistant.

Reporting to Susan Mullin, the President & CEO of the Southlake Regional Health Centre Foundation, the Vice President, Major Gifts & Campaign will be a key member of the Foundation’s Senior Leadership team. The Senior Leadership team is responsible for delivering exceptional philanthropic results in support of Southlake, and for creating and sustaining a high-performing values-based team culture at Southlake Foundation.

The Vice President will work directly with leadership and campaign volunteers, donors, Health Centre staff, and physicians to build and maintain strong relationships to support the achievement of our vision to become a leader in transformative philanthropy.

The Vice President will develop and execute major gift campaign plans, grow and sustain a robust pipeline of major and planned gift donors, and build and maintain lifelong relationships between our donors and Southlake to support a strong culture of philanthropy. In executing these plans, the Vice President will ensure they represent our values of integrity, collaboration, and innovation.

A true collaborator, the new incumbent will work closely with the President & CEO and the Vice Presidents of Marketing & Donor Experience and of Finance & Operations to lead an organization to new levels of results across all fundraising programs in support of current and emerging priorities for the patients and families served by Southlake.



Southlake Regional Health Centre is a full-service hospital with a regional, clinically advanced focus. As a regionally designated site, Southlake is responsible for developing and providing advanced levels of care to the nearly 1.5 million people who reside in York Region, South Simcoe, and as far north as Muskoka. Advanced, specialty services include: arthritis care, cancer care (ranked #1 out of 14 regional cancer centres in Ontario), cardiac care (the 3rd largest regional program in Ontario), cataract surgery, child and adolescent eating disorders, mental health services for children, paediatrics and perinatal care, and thoracic surgery. Home to the province’s 3rd busiest Emergency Department (120,000 visits expected this year), Southlake offers more than 400 patient beds with 30,000 in-patient admissions and more than 530,000 out-patient visits each year.

Under the leadership of Arden Krystal, our new President & CEO, Southlake Regional Health Centre has undergone an executive team re-organization. In particular, the new Vice President Capital, Facilities and Business Development will work closely with the Foundation senior team. The Hospital is undertaking two significant initiatives that will directly influence the efforts of the Foundation in our Region over many years. These include a five-year strategic plan and a master site plan. Both are being undertaken with involvement and insight from the Foundation. Emerging as the first new priority will be support for the expansion of adult mental health beds and associated services.

From the building of the Stronach Regional Cancer Centre that saves the lives of thousands of residents each year, to the upgrade of Health Centre-wide diagnostic imaging that enables thousands of patients to receive timely diagnoses, to the renovation of the Bahen Chant rehabilitation services that support hundreds of people getting back on their feet after physical trauma, and finally to the opening of the Margaret Bahen Hospice for York Region – we have seen the power of what personal and corporate philanthropy is capable of. In fiscal 2018, with support from our generous donors, we raised $9.2 million.

The Vice President, Major Gifts & Campaign will be an innovative, big picture thinker who will balance strategy with a commitment “to do” and to execute. The new incumbent will have a proven track record and demonstrated fundraising success that includes capital campaign management and closing major gifts. With a laser-like focus on major gift fundraising, the ideal candidate will promote a robust call culture and bring an “out the door” approach, with active leadership to, and participation in, securing multiple six and seven figure gifts from individuals and corporations.

The new incumbent will have a deep understanding of the evolving nature of philanthropy and the competitive realities of the charitable sector. Energized by the capacity in our community to engage philanthropic gifts for transformational investment in our Hospital and the future of our healthcare, the successful candidate will bring a high-level of sophistication in how we build our donor relationships, along with a strong commitment to our donor’s journey. The Vice President will articulate our case for support and inspire philanthropy through aspirational and visionary conversations with our donors and prospective donors.

Having past experience engaging senior volunteers and community leaders in major gift prospect identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship, the ideal candidate will effectively work with and through others. The new incumbent will be comfortable within large and complex organizations, motivating institutional leadership to enhance campaign planning and major gift fundraising.

Reporting to the President & CEO of the Foundation, the Vice President, Major Gifts & Campaign’s areas of responsibility will include:

Campaign Strategy and Execution

  • Leveraging campaign experience, advising and supporting the development and implementation of campaign procedures, policies, and operating plans in order to ensure highest professional standards for enhancing the quality and effectiveness of the Foundation’s fundraising efforts.
  • Working closely with the VP Marketing & Donor Experience, leading the development of compelling case material.
  • Providing guidance and mentorship to Foundation teams on the development, planning and execution of fundraising campaigns to establish and maintain fundraising momentum and capacity, and achieve specified campaign objectives.
  • Pipeline development to support a plan to double major gift results over 5 years.
  • Supporting the recruitment of and actively engaging and supporting the major gift efforts of a Philanthropy Cabinet of business and community leaders and influencers.

Fundraising and Development

  • Leading the efforts of the Philanthropy team, raise $5M+ annually and increase major gift revenue by 30% by fiscal 2020 – 2021.
  • Developing, recommending, and monitoring progress against annual and multi-year production and revenue targets for major gifts and planned giving.
  • Personally managing a portfolio of no fewer than 80 major gift prospects and directly conducting cultivation visits, solicitation calls, and stewardship activities that sets the example for the team.
  • Ensuring appropriate donor recognition, stewardship plans and strategies are identified, negotiated and implemented effectively and consistently.

Strategic Leadership and Team Building

  • Recruiting, engaging, coaching, and inspiring a major gift team to high-performance to achieve and exceed growth targets.
  • Creating a meaningful and sustainable physician engagement strategy that engages physicians as donors, Southlake ambassadors and as prospect lead generators.
  • Providing strong, effective leadership and mentorship to Foundation volunteers and Health Centre staff/physicians related to their pivotal role in successful capital campaigns and major gift fundraising.
  • Collaborating with and providing strategic insights into plans for and execution of all fundraising plans across the organization.
  • In collaboration with the Foundation senior executive team, nurturing a strong, values-based, high-performance culture.
  • Leading by example, collaboratively working with service-delivery teams (communications, stewardship, systems, and finance) to ensure adherence to Foundation policies and procedures and to identify opportunities for improvement.



  • Substantial leadership and management experience with revenue generation responsibilities in a large, multi-layered complex fundraising organization.
  • Proven personal track record of success in cultivating and soliciting six- to seven-figure major gift donations; leading successful capital campaigns and recruiting and engaging volunteers and program leaders (e.g. physicians) for fundraising success.
  • Skilled at translating institutional priorities into inspiring, donor-centric cases for support.
  • Strategically agile, with knowledge and experience in fundraising program development, implementing best practices, and in executing and assessing successful strategies and plans.
  • Analytical skills and competency in program analysis, data-mining, prospect research, segmentation and database programs; Raisers Edge experience is preferred but not essential.
  • A proven leader with a demonstrated ability to engage a team to deliver a challenging plan.
  • Proven ability to hold self and others accountable.
  • Demonstrated success in creating a climate in which people want to do their best and in developing people to succeed.
  • High-level of polish and charisma with a donor-first attitude and a passion for healthcare.
  • Exceptional negotiation and mediation skills.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to work in fast-paced, sometimes ambiguous environment with shifting priorities.
  • A diplomat with outstanding interpersonal skills and a collaborative management style who is able to effectively work with and through others in the complexities of not-for-profit management.
  • Personal reputation for integrity and the highest ethical standards.
  • University education required.
  • CFRE and/or FAHP is an asset.
