The Toronto Environmental Alliance is seeking a Development Director.

TEA was founded in 1988. Our mandate is to promote a greener Toronto for all. We work with concerned individuals and grassroots organizations, professionals and workers, as well as elected officials, encouraging the participation of local people on local issues. TEA envisions Toronto as a green, healthy and equitable city with economic activity that sustains our environment.
TEA is recognized locally and nationally for our municipal work on climate change, waste reduction, toxics reduction, transit, Greenbelt protection, energy efficiency and green power -- issues we believe are critical to the health and well-being of Toronto residents. Our collaborations with the community (eg. community groups, local labour groups, small businesses, anti-poverty groups) are cherished and key to our past and future successes.
We are a not-for-profit organization that is not a charity. This ensures there are no legal restrictions to our advocacy work faced by charities subject to federal tax laws. We are fiercely non-partisan and work closely with any decision-maker who wants to build a greener city for all.
TEA is looking for a Development Director who is passionate about environmental issues and engaging the public. This person understands the importance of engaging people where they live and wants to be part of a smaller not-for-profit organization that demands wearing many hats.
The Development Director will bring energy and innovation to a mature organization that has an excellent reputation at Toronto City Hall and with its donors, funders, supporters and community allies. The person will directly manage two development staff and oversee a 5-15 person canvass team. The Director will implement a Development Plan that puts a primary focus on creating and nurturing donor relationships through a door, phone and digital canvass program.
As part of the Management Team alongside the Executive Director and Campaigns Director, the Development Director will help implement TEA’s Strategic Plan (which currently is a living document) and ensure TEA’s advocacy activities also help achieve organizational fundraising and campaign goals.
The Development Director manages the Development Coordinator, who is in charge of database maintenance and data tracking, as well as the Development Manager, who manages both the door and phone canvass teams.
- Support the Development Manager to ensure that the canvass team is aided in a HR capacity. As well as handling on-going training and inspirational engagement materials pertaining to current campaigns
- Oversee the hiring and training of all new canvassers to hit canvass volume projections
- Ensure all canvassers are either at or above their nightly standards.
- Support the professional development of the Development Manager with on-going training and mentorship
- Create robust and accessible reporting mechanisms for canvass to monitor their performance
Internal Data Management
- Audit and ensure that all data collection, uploads and on-going tracking reflect the needs of the canvass team, donor engagement, budget tracking and engagement escalation both in person and digitally
- Ensure that wherever possible, innovative revamps of data tracking are done to streamline processes and decrease administrative time
- Continue to monitor and reevaluate the pieces of data we collect to ensure all collection and tracking is strategically linked to organizational strategy and campaign goals
- Work collaboratively with the Communications Coordinator to ensure data tracking compliments and escalates supporter engagement as well as donor engagement
- Ensure wherever possible, fundraising pitches enter campaign materials and digital outreach
- Ensure campaign events have fundraising personnel available wherever appropriate
- Work with the Communications Coordinator to ensure donor and supporter emails, flyers, reports, graphics and engagement materials are up to date and in line with campaigns materials
- Each year plan and execute two major events for supporters and donors to TEA
- Manage all venues, contracts, talent, ticket sales, publicity, auctions, digital engagement, decorations, and event follow-up
- Develop both events to outreach large audiences with the goal of education and entertainment
- Co-manage all events alongside the Executive Director
- 5+ years experience running a variety of development activities with a proven success record, ideally in a not-for-profit setting
- 2+ years experience managing teams
- Experience with running a door canvass
- Experience managing large events an asset
- Experience with Nation Builder and/or another CRM
- Self-assured, focused and highly motivated
- A thorough understanding of environmental issues
- Excellent written and verbal communications skills
- A post-secondary education and a second language are definite assets
- CFRE designation is an asset
Terms of employment:
This is a full-time permanent position. Compensation is $67,875 per year with annual increases based on a salary grid system. TEA also offers generous vacation provisions.
