Manager, Governors Council
The Shaw Festival is an ensemble repertory theatre company inspired by the spirit of Bernard Shaw to create unforgettable theatre encounters. The Shaw Festival is currently recruiting a full time Manager of Governors Council to join our Development Team.
The Manager, Governors Council, is responsible for the Governors Council (GC) portfolio, focusing on individuals who contribute between $2000 and $25,000 to the Shaw Festival on an annual basis. This role manages all aspects including acquisitions, renewals and upgrades. Major responsibilities include: strategic planning and implementation of the program; building, monitoring and meeting the GC budget; generating program materials; and monitors the ongoing administrative and donor servicing demands. This position will also have a full personal complement of donors to cultivate, solicit and steward.
Key qualities include excellent strategic thinking, engagement and communications skills, creativity and attention to detail. Your role in dealing with donors at all levels – as well as artistic and production staff, senior staff and Board – requires diplomacy.
As the representative of the Governors Council portfolio, you will be expected to keep informed about activity in the field of patron giving in the arts and other not-for-profit fields, as well as new developments in membership programming and major gifts, and be prepared to bring this information forward.
This position reports to the Director of Advancement.
This position will work closely with the following staff: Executive Director; Artistic Director; Director of Advancement; Director, Donor Relations; Associate Director of Development; Senior Development Officer Major Gifts; Senior Development Officer, Individual Gifts and Legacy Giving; Manager, Membership Services.
You will work closely with other development staff to ensure that the patron giving strategy is fully integrated with the overall development plan, including the Shaw Festival membership program. You will be asked to participate in development department planning, management, and trouble-shooting discussions. You will also play a pivotal role in the prospect review, moves management and stewardship discussions.
Hours of Work:
This position’s standard work week is Monday to Friday, 9-5 but requires flexible work hours, working weekends especially during the height of the season (May to September), and travel.
With responsibility for a range of annual donors ($2000 to $25,000), you will:
- Develop a strong strategic plan which encompasses Governors Council membership acquisition, renewal and upgrade strategies with measurable objectives.
- Monitor program revenues and expenses. Respond to budget challenges with innovative solutions and new opportunities.
- Effectively use the Tessitura database as it pertains to the GC program.
- Prepare revenue reports for management and Board reports.
- Work with the Development staff to develop a dynamic cultivation and stewardship plan for all levels of GC membership.
- Consult with graphic designers and writers, develop effective communications materials for use by the GC program.
- Coordinate with the Stewardship Officer, Processing Coordinator, Box Office and other staff in matters relating to patron ticketing and donations - including effective communication of objectives, plans and timelines; ensuring top-level servicing and interaction with donors; and provide input to managers of related activities and issues
- Coordinate with the Director of Advancement and Director Donor Relations to explore donor and audience engagement opportunities both in Niagara-on-the-Lake and beyond.
- Participate in ongoing strategic planning and prospect management discussion for Producers Circle, Artists Circle, major gift prospects and legacy giving.
- Assist with hosting duties patron’s lounge and Development Events as required
- Other duties as assigned
- Represent the Shaw Festival and the Governors Council at Company Events and other Special Events.
The successful candidate will possess the following:
Minimum 5 years experience in progressively senior fundraising positions
Demonstrated management and motivational skills
Accountability for fundraising results
Successful track record in managing an annual giving program and securing gifts in the $2,000 to $25,000 range
- A creative thinker with exceptional oral and written presentation skills.
- Excellent attention to detail
- Ability to inspire others to achieve outstanding results
- University degree in a related discipline preferred. CFRE certification an asset
- Passionate about the performing arts, and theatre in particular
