Weizmann Canada is currently seeking a motivated and energetic Senior Director of Development to oversee major gift fundraising efforts in Toronto. Working closely with and reporting to the National Executive Director & CEO, the Senior Director of Development will identify, cultivate and solicit individual and corporate major gift donors.
The Senior Director will work closely with a core group of volunteers and be responsible for creating strategy and collaborating with team members in support of major gift and related fundraising and stewardship activities and goals. There are currently two direct reports for this position, one in Toronto, and one in Montreal. The Senior Director of Development will also collaborate closely with the Regional Director for Western Canada. Please note that this position is based at our Toronto office at 55 Eglinton Ave East, Toronto.

Weizmann Canada is a national community with a core group of dedicated donors and volunteers, and 12 professional staff who share a common vision with the Institute of advancing science for the benefit of humanity. Our mission is twofold: to raise awareness and support for the Weizmann Institute of Science in order to maintain its standards of excellence; and, to promote science literacy.
Weizmann Canada has chapters in Montreal, Toronto, Calgary and Vancouver, and offices currently in Montreal, Toronto and Calgary. In the past five years we have more than doubled our revenue. In 2017 thanks to the generosity of our donors and volunteers, we raised $14.5 million. We are on track to reach our revenue goal of $20 million per year by 2020, and the new Senior Director of Development will play a key role in helping us to achieve this goal.

THE IDEAL CANDIDATE
High-energy and proactive, the ideal candidate will be a self-starter who takes pride in exceptional quality of work, achieving goals, and having a reputation as a strong performer. The successful candidate will be quick learner who is comfortable with a fast-paced environment. A strong planner with exceptional time management and organizational skills, the Senior Director of Development will be consistent, detail-oriented, and calm under pressure.
Possessing initiative and strong follow through, the Senior Director will be tenacious about uncovering prospects and connections to build the prospect pipeline. The ideal candidate will have concrete major gift experience at the 5, 6, and 7 figure level, as well as generalist experience in other areas of fundraising. Confident working with top philanthropists who want to dream forward with Weizmann, the successful candidate will inspire and build enthusiasm with potential donors.
The Senior Director will have confidence, polish, and a high level of professionalism. The new incumbent will have a strong knowledge and understanding of the philanthropic environment in Toronto, and previous experience working with high-net worth donors in the Jewish community. Discretion, tact, and judgment are all essential in this role. An articulate and proactive communicator, the ideal candidate will possess strong listening, speaking, and writing skills, as well as experience with proposal development, negotiations and tailoring gift agreements
A strong prioritizer who is comfortable in a fast-paced environment, the Senior Director of Development will balance the need to work independently on a donor portfolio with supporting a team, colleagues, and volunteers. The ideal candidate will be collaborative and dependable, and willing to engage proactively with others across the country to share, learn, ideate, and find solutions together. Since this is a new position in a growing organization, the Senior Director must be flexible and willing to pitch in when needed. A curious, lifelong learner, the successful candidate will have the ability to understand and get excited about science that benefits humanity.
The ideal candidate will have proven experience in effectively engaging, supporting, and encouraging volunteers. Warm, outgoing, and encouraging, the Senior Director of Development will embrace our volunteers and celebrate their efforts. As a strong partner for our leadership volunteers, the new incumbent will work alongside volunteers to clarify the purpose, strategy, and goals of committees, and ensure volunteers are informed and up-to-date. The Senior Director will help to guide volunteers in opening doors and will ensure follow-up in a timely and professional manner.
A closer who is goal orientated and motivated to achieve targets, the successful candidate will have a successful track record in identifying prospects, developing relationships, and closing gifts or business deals. The Senior Director will bring a business mindset and a disciplined approach to planning, goal-setting, and performance. The ideal candidate will be optimistic and comfortable with stretch goals, yet at the same time able to forecast revenues and manage expectations in an effective manner.
The Senior Director of Development will be a strong people manager who is able to motivate and mentor staff using positivity and encouragement. A good listener who is available and receptive to input, the ideal candidate will offer creative and strategic suggestions in a thoughtful way. The Senior Director will ensure that staff are on top of their goals, guiding them in donor strategy, and helping them to achieve success.
Flexibility in schedule is required as the Senior Director will be expected to be available for some evening meetings and events, as well as to travel to Montreal occasionally. In addition, there will likely be an annual trip to the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel; thus, a valid passport is also required.
Increase awareness of the Weizmann Institute of Science in Toronto, helping to build a broader donor base and to increase the frequency and level of major gifts.
Proactively identify new leads and prospective donors for Weizmann Canada, mainly in the Toronto area but also elsewhere in Canada.
Personally solicit gifts at the 5, 6, and 7 figure level, as well as cultivate and steward donors to maintain involvement, interest and support.
Support the growth and success of direct reports and colleagues through effective coaching and management, including undertaking joint donor calls to provide support and feedback.
Support the National Executive Director & CEO in the strategy, cultivation and stewardship of leadership donors (7 and 8 figure donations) in Toronto, independently or together, whether through background or foreground moves.
Help implement the Legacy Giving program in collaboration with team members, including identification, cultivation, and solicitation of legacy gifts.
Undertake stewardship with major gift and leadership donors in the Toronto area, personally delivering impact reports and supporting other stewardship efforts.
Partner with the National Managers of Stewardship, Educational Programs & Events, and Communications on the planning, coordination, and delivery of engagement activities.
Provide strategic oversight and input into donor events and tactical support where required.
Assist in planning an annual trip to the Weizmann Institute for volunteers and donors from Toronto.
Provide industry knowledge, monitor trends, and implement best practices as appropriate.
Volunteers and Boards
Support the revitalization of the Toronto Chapter by working in partnership with volunteer leaders.
Assist in the recruitment, training and motivation of volunteers who support major gift goals.
Assist the Vice President in leadership development programs to ensure that both volunteers and team members are trained and supported in order to participate in major gift fundraising activities.
Leadership & Team Management
Provide leadership to two direct reports, including setting goals and expectations, coaching, supporting high level performance, and recognizing success.
Promote a culture that is donor-centric, where requests are responded to with a high degree of urgency, professionalism and accuracy.
Provide external industry knowledge, monitor trends in the philanthropic environment and implement best practices as appropriate.
