Job Description

TRU’s Advancement Office provides a critical role of philanthropy. The Office is charged with maximizing the financial gift support to the institution by seeking private contributions in order to increase the margin of excellence of its educational and research programs.

The Director of Development - Planned Giving is a member of the senior Advancement team responsible for the development, implementation and management of a pan-institutional Planned Giving Program, including the establishment and implementation of all of the Planned Giving strategic plans, policies and goals.

This position draws upon his/her high level of charitable gift planning expertise to motivate prospective donors and leads cultivation, solicitation and stewardship. The Director of Development - Planned Giving manages a portfolio of individual donors and prospects. The role identifies prospective supporters, builds relationships and makes face-to-face contact both independently and in conjunction with faculty and Dean’s.

The Director of Development - Planned Giving requires an ability to identify, build and maintain strong and cooperative relationships with individuals. The Director must keep informed of trends and best practices in philanthropy, planned giving and estate planning.

The work scope includes, but is not limited to, advisory roles, research, the development of prospect lists, cultivation and stewardship planning and execution well as making medium to major gift asks for Thompson Rivers University. The Director will be responsible for developing and implementing comprehensive strategies and tactical plans for identifying, cultivating and securing planned gifts for the overall sustainable financial growth of the university.

As an integral member of the Advancement senior leadership team, the Director provides leadership, support and direction across a wide range of areas:

  1. Creating collateral, proposals and cases for support to detail and market planned giving at TRU.
  2. Develops and implements a plan for identifying, cultivating, soliciting and stewarding planned giving prospects.
  3. Writes draft gift agreements for review by prospects and their advisors to secure funding for student awards, operations and Faculty initiatives.
  4. Organize and help conduct presentations for prospective donors, financial and estate planners and other constituents.
  5. Write articles on planned giving opportunities and donors stories for publications.
  6. Develop and implement a comprehensive plan for marketing planned giving at TRU.
  7. Lead and steward the Legacy Society.
  8. Develop procedures for managing and recording expectancies, and recording planned gifts as well as doing statistical analysis of these records.
  9. Prepare financial illustrations of proposed gifts.
  10. Recruit and manage a volunteer committee of planned giving advisors, and cultivate relationships with financial planners, accountants, estate lawyers and life insurance advisors to make them aware of and keep them up to date on programs, research and capital plans at TRU for funding opportunities for their clients.
  11. Become informed and mentor Directors of Development and Advancement staff about the tax aspects of charitable gifts and new legislation and revenue rulings affecting planned gifts.
  12. Provide regular reports to the Director of Advancement.
  13. Ensure that active estates are being properly administered by the executor/trustee in a timely, appropriate, efficient and fiduciary manner.
  14. Record estate gifts; make recommendations for use of undesignated and designated estates, in accordance with the testators wishes
  15. Ensure that all confirmed bequests and other planned gifts are properly identified in Banner.
  16. Develops a working list of 100 prospects and maintain a data base on cultivation activity and moves, and updating the Director of Advancement of progress with these prospect on a weekly basis
  17. Responsible for making a minimum 8 asks per month and having 20 face to face meetings with planned giving prospects per month
  18. Liaise with Advancement staff in a prospect clearing process to ensure prospects aren’t receiving multiple asks from various departments at TRU, this is to occur in person on a weekly basis.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • University degree in a related field
  • Minimum 6 years or more experience in fundraising including successful management of a portfolio of planned giving prospects
  • Familiarity with tax aspects of estate gifts and legislation affecting such gifts
  • Certified Fund Raising Executive (CFRE) designation is an asset
