Job Description

Reporting to the Executive Director, Advancement, the Director, Development is an integral part of the Advancement leadership team. Working in close collaboration with the Executive Director and the Director Donor Relations the Director leads a team of fundraisers and support staff in all aspects of Development (fundraising) activities encompassing major gifts and annual giving for the Rotman School of Management and Rotman Commerce

The Director is a successful fundraiser with deep experience in all aspects of fundraising from strategy development, identification, cultivation through stewardship to successful closing of major and annual gifts. With an in depth understanding of the academic and other priorities of the Faculty, primary responsibilities include the development and implementation of major gift and leadership giving strategies that encompass annual business plans as well as longer term 3-5 year plans. Fundraising targets are defined for the team as well as by individual and all fundraisers, including the Director, are measured against results achieved annually. 

The overall objective is to enhance the fundraising capability of the School, establish programs of ongoing endowments and gifts to the School, plan and design strategies for and nurture and cement continuing good relations with all levels of potential donors.  The Director will provide leadership and professional advice and support to faculty, staff and volunteers with respect to fundraising strategies and approaches to the School, will liaise with the University’s Division of Development and University Relations and foster relationships with volunteers, faculty and others in support of development activities.  The Director is a strong leader and manager who can develop, motivate and manage a highly successful team of fundraisers.

EDUCATION:

University degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.

EXPERIENCE:

Minimum of 8 years’ related experience in progressively more senior roles. Proven fundraising and/or sales and strategy experience.  Significant managerial experience leading a large team.  Knowledge and experience in major gifts and annual giving fundraising as well as managing and leading a team of volunteers.

SKILLS:

Superior communications both oral and written, interpersonal and presentation skills.  Proactive leadership skills with the ability to motivate, win commitment from and organize influential and affluent volunteers.  Ability to manage, develop and lead a development staff.  Ability to develop and manage budgets.  Ability to work effectively in a team environment.  Detail oriented, strong organizational, research and analytical skills.  Initiative, tact, diplomacy and creativity are required.  Ability to multi-task successfully in a fast paced, results oriented environment.  Proven ability to motivate and manage staff.

OTHER:

A deep knowledge and understanding of the strategic priorities of Rotman and the University of Toronto and fundraising is desirable.
