About us:

Rainbow Railroad is a registered charitable organization that provides support to LGBTQI+ individuals seeking a safe haven from state-sponsored or enabled violence. This includes airfare and financial support for travel-related costs, including costs immediately before and after travel.

Rainbow Railroad achieved its charitable status in 2014, and has quickly built its operations to keep up with a rapid level of growth. Since its founding in 2006, Rainbow Railroad has funded travel for nearly 500 individuals. A transformational grant in 2015 and 2016 allowed the organization to grow at an incredibly rapid rate. We have committed to continue to grow in order to help more people.

The Role

We’re looking for a highly motivated individual to achieve the resource development goals of the organization. The Manager of Development will work with the Executive Director as well as senior staff and volunteers in conceiving and executing Rainbow Railroad’s fundraising strategy, playing a key role in identifying, cultivating, soliciting and stewarding major donors and corporate/foundation partners. The individual will also lead the organization’s development department - including supporting staff responsible for donor acquisition, stewardship and communications.

The ideal candidate will thrive in a fast paced, busy environment. We are seeking an individual who is highly organized, with a keen eye for detail, and has the right combination of initiative and team-building skills. The successful candidate is polished and self-assured, a relationship builder with a strong boardroom presence and business acumen, yet community-driven as well.  The ability to execute stewardship plans will be a big priority for this role. This role requires ambition, creativity, flexibility and experience leading an expanded Development program to generate up to $3M CAD per year.

Responsibilities include:

Strategic Planning and Fund Development:

  • Set and achieve revenue targets, and ensures the viability of diverse revenue generating programs (i.e. donations, foundations, sponsorships and special events).                                  

  • Develop the annual philanthropy plan in presentation to the Board of Directors and its Fund Development Committee.

  • Maintain a proactive and effective leadership role in the identification, cultivation, and solicitation of corporate, individual (major gifts and planned giving), foundation contributions.

  • Lead, manage, and continually develop the Development team.

  • Provide detailed reports of fundraising progress to the Executive Director, the Fund Development Committee and the Board on a regular basis.                                   

  • Establish and executes Rainbow Railroad Stewardship Policy.

Major Gifts:

  • Manage a prospect portfolio and carries out significant moves in accordance with a strategy designed to result in increased philanthropic support for Rainbow Railroad.

  • Identify, research, cultivate and solicit prospects capable of contributing major gifts.

  • Lead the All Aboard Committees in Canada, the United States, and the U.K.

Grants, Foundation & Corporate Cultivation

  • Cultivate and steward relationships with existing grant, foundation and corporate supporters.

  • Research and establish new relationships with prospective foundations and corporations.

  • Coordinate the writing of new foundation grants.

Communications

  • Write and approve content on various Rainbow Railroad products (social media, website, print collateral).

  • Represent Rainbow Railroad at various speaking engagements, presentations and community engagement opportunities.

 

QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS

  • At least five years of progressive experience in fundraising – CFRE is an asset.

  • A degree from a post-secondary institution and/or relevant experience.

  • A successful track record of personally identifying, cultivating and soliciting individual donors, corporations and foundations. You are also an effective “closer”.

  • Proven skills in leading and communicating fundraising strategy.

  • Demonstrated experience in managing people and budgets.

  • Ability to report on fundraising activities clearly and concisely, with appropriate metrics and financial data.

  • Familiarity with database software.

  • Excellent organizational skills with a keen eye for detail.

  • A versatile, skilled and effective communicator with demonstrable evidence of strong written and oral communications skills.

  • Ability to work effectively in a dynamic environment both independently and as part of a team.

  • Entrepreneurial spirit and drive.
