Toronto is experiencing a renaissance when it comes to our parks, public realm and urban forests, and as the City’s official fundraising partner the Toronto Parks and Trees Foundation plays a critical role in engaging our communities, and especially our philanthropic communities, in building, enhancing and animating our common grounds - the parks and public spaces where we come together to build a healthy, connected city.


The opportunity:

Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director is the Chief Staff Officer of the organization, charged with the leadership and day-to-day operation of the Foundation. We are seeking a results-oriented professional with a passion for Toronto's parks and urban forest who is creative, energetic, collaborative, a self-starter and a team-builder. In particular, we are seeking:


An experienced fundraiser

With gifts ranging from $25 to $25M, donor attention has been turning to Toronto’s public spaces. As the official fundraising partner of City of Toronto Parks, Forestry and Recreation, and as the charitable trustee for diverse community groups like the Friends of Allan Gardens and the Riverdale Farm Stewardship Group, the Foundation is uniquely positioned to tap into this growing appetite for philanthropy, sponsorship and grant-making for Toronto’s parks and urban canopy. Your senior experience in professional fundraising, ideally paired with a CFRE accreditation, has positioned you well to evaluate the philanthropic environment and lead teams to develop campaigns, proposals and pitches and successfully secure resources. You’re not only the kind of person who can see philanthropic opportunity, you also have the tactical skills to bring donors, funders and partners in the door and then “close the deal”.


A skilled communicator

You know what it means to be an ambassador for an organization, and you’re not afraid to speak, network and represent the Foundation wherever and whenever possible. You have demonstrated your ability to distill organizational complexity into just a few sentences and to convey complex concepts to any audience. You have an eye for good design and an ear for good copy. You know that communications and fundraising go hand-in-hand, and that in small organizations, everyone learns to do both. You’re excited about the opportunity to raise the profile of this vital organization, expanding our reach and enabling us to achieve more than ever before.


An agile strategist

The parks and forestry community in Toronto is still emerging, with new organizations forming and established organizations evolving to meet new opportunities. You are passionate about collective impact and finding ways to support and engage everyone in a shared success. You are curious, analytical and strategic, allowing you to see the big picture and your role in it. You like to be guided by strategic vision and principles, but are not so rigid as to let a moment pass you by because it “wasn’t in the plan”. You are able to build relationships that adapt and evolve as opportunities emerge and you’re comfortable building these relationships in every sector - with governments, corporations, large charities and small community-based non-profits.


An experienced leader

You know what it means to be the Chief Staff Officer of an organization and to report to a Board of Directors. Your experience with board governance, supporting volunteer leadership in decision-making and oversight, and your knowledge of key legislation has prepared you for this role. You’re a strong team player with demonstrated experience leading, supporting and engaging staff in a small-shop environment. Numbers don’t scare you, and you secretly get a little excited about budgeting, financial analysis and database management. You know that success lies in the details as much as it does in the vision.


We are offering a unique opportunity to lead a vital city-building organization at a key moment in its history, to lead and work with a dynamic group of staff who are passionate about their roles, and to collaborate with Board Directors who are dedicated to the success of the organization. Compensation will be negotiated, commensurate with experience, in the $90,000 to $120,000 range.
