THE OPPORTUNITY

The Sunshine Foundation of Canada, located in London, Ontario, is seeking a Director of Development to provide leadership and management for the direction, planning, and execution of our development plan as we continue to make dreams come true for children living with severe physical disabilities or life-threatening illnesses. 

The Director will be responsible for developing and implementing an annual strategic plan to elevate fundraising across our organization by setting clear goals and metrics for revenue development, volunteer and donor engagement. Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer, the Director will provide strategic and operational leadership to a team of seven professionals and support staff. The Director of Development will also be a valued member of the senior leadership team and will work in partnership with our Board of Directors, Fund Development Committee, program leaders, and volunteers.

 

ABOUT THE SUNSHINE FOUNDATION OF CANADA

The  Sunshine  Foundation  of  Canada  is  a  national  Canadian  charity  impacting  the  lives  of  children  living  with  severe  physical  disabilities  or  life-threatening  illnesses.  Established in 1987 by a London, Ontario police officer as a legacy to his son who passed away from muscular dystrophy, he wanted children like his son to be able to live their dreams.

Sunshine Dream Programs are once-in-a-lifetime experiences for kids that ignite a sense of newfound independence, build confidence, and create joyful memories that will stay with them for the rest of their lives. By having their dreams come true, kids are inspired to keep dreaming, are willing to try new things, and have a more positive outlook on life.

Sunshine has two dream programs: Sunshine Dreams, once-in-a-lifetime customized experiences which can range from family trips to meeting a hero to outdoor play-spaces, and Sunshine DreamLift, a whirlwind ‘day of yes’ adventure that transports a plane full of Sunshine kids to a Disney theme park and back home in just one day! For many children, it’s a day to experience a first plane ride and a taste of independence away from mom and dad. It’s a day to be a regular kid in a magical setting and make memories that will last a lifetime.

Over thirty  years  later,  we  celebrate 63 Sunshine DreamLifts and over 8,700  young  lives  transformed  by  the  tremendous  impact  of  having  a  dream  come  true.  These  dreams  have  ignited  new  possibilities,  optimism,  independence,  and  confidence  in  children and their families helping  them  break  barriers  and  write  a  brighter  future  story  for  themselves.

Sunshine continues to operate from our home town of London, Ontario with the support of a national volunteer network from coast-to-coast. In 2017, through the generous support of our donors, we raised close to $3 million to grant 50 dreams to incredible children across Canada.

THE IDEAL CANDIDATE

The Director of Development will be an established fundraising professional with a scope of experience ranging from major gifts, corporate partnerships, events and direct mail.

The new incumbent will be strategic with a clear sense of how to successfully activate plans to reach goals. The ideal candidate will build on our past efforts and accomplishments, and in collaboration with the fund development team, will determine our fundraising plan and path forward.

The new incumbent will ensure processes and systems are established to confirm that quality data informs our decisions. The successful candidate will grow our donor base and our prospect pipeline to advance our revenue generation capabilities. Carrying their own portfolio, the Director will nurture and sustain relationships with our long term and generous donors.

Energetic and driven, the ideal candidate will bring a results oriented focus and perspective. Instilling a call culture and an “out the door” approach, the new incumbent will be an inspirational coach, guiding and motivating our development team to reach their full potential. The successful candidate will establish metrics, benchmarks and moves management discipline to encourage efficiencies and best practice fundraising. Decisive and concise, the ideal candidate will share information and value input. Collaborative, tactful and kind, the Director will nurture a cohesive team.

The new incumbent will be comfortable interacting with wide variety of audiences and stakeholders, from grassroots organizations to C-suite executives. KEY AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY

Reporting to the CEO, the Director of Development will be responsible for:

Strategy, Planning and Fundraising

  • Working with the CEO and Board of Directors, polish and execute the current Strategic Development Plan while being instrumental in the development and implementation of future strategic planning in the fund development area.
  • Manage all national fundraising programs, including direct mail, major gifts, partnerships, and events. Ensure all annual fundraising targets are met or exceeded.
  • Regularly monitor the progress towards these goals and targets, and report on the activity and results of fundraising programs, initiatives, and staff.
  • Foster strong relationships with key stakeholders such as donors, partners and volunteers.
  • In collaboration with other staff, work with volunteer leaders and others to identify linkage, ability and interest of major gift prospects.
  • Develop and oversee an integrated prospect identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship program for all donors.
  • Oversee the relationship management of all major donors (individuals, corporate donors, organizations and foundations), including managing their own personal portfolio.
  • Develop and administer the annual national operating budget for development.
  • Establish appropriate annual goals, targets and metrics for development to ensure that all fundraising efforts are effective, efficient, and successful.
  • Regularly monitor the progress towards these goals and targets, and report on the activity and results of fundraising programs, initiatives and staff.
  • In collaboration with the CEO, ensure ongoing knowledge of best fundraising practices and benchmark performance; ensure that all fundraising programs and activities fall within ethical, fiscal, and legal standards, and within Foundation policies and regulations.
  • Represent Sunshine Foundation of Canada in a professional, appropriate, informed and consistent manner.

 

Team Leadership and Management

  • Direct and manage a staff of seven: including three direct reports, and their respective teams.
  • Provide leadership and guidance for the development team.
  • Collaborate with all Sunshine staff, particularly direct reports, program fulfillment and marketing.
  • Recruit, manage, mentor and inspire staff.
  • Develop and implement programs for professional development for fundraising staff.
  • Oversee the recruitment and retention of direct report staff including hiring, accountability and annual performance reviews.
  • Work with staff to develop and achieve performance goals, targets, and metrics for their programs and revenue streams.
  • In concert with direct reports, monitor departmental budgets.

 

Volunteer Leadership

  • Grow the fundraising volunteer structure, including the Fund Development committee, and participate in the identification, recruitment, training, management, and stewardship of fundraising volunteers.
  • Attend Board meetings and make presentations to various committees and groups involved with Sunshine.
  • In partnership with the CEO and Board of Directors, champion fundraising and a culture of philanthropy throughout the organization.

 

QUALIFICATIONS AND COMPETENCIES

  • Proven experience in a management level role providing strategic leadership in the area of fund development.
  • Progressive fundraising experience and success at a leadership level, preferably with major gifts from individuals and corporations ($50,000+).
  • Excellent track record of staff and volunteer management.
  • Outstanding interpersonal, leadership and analytical skills.
  • A proven track record of creating integrated cause marketing programs with a successful outcome of partnership engagement at $50,000+.
  • Ability to understand the needs and interests of individual donors, corporate partners and other funding bodies in order to develop long-term relationships with the Sunshine Foundation.
  • Excellent written communication and public speaking skills.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Willingness to be flexible and adaptable in a changing work environment.
  • Understanding of donor management systems, in particular Raiser’s Edge NXT.
  • Frequent local travel (Toronto) will be required as well as occasional national travel; a valid driver’s license and regular access to a vehicle are therefore required for this position.
  • A Bachelor’s Degree is required and CFRE accreditation would be considered an asset.
