Since the Li Ka Shing Knowledge Institute debuted in 2011, St. Michael’s has become internationally renowned as a research powerhouse – at the forefront of new medical discoveries and home to the world’s top medical talent.


Based in downtown Toronto, Ontario and reporting to the President, the Chief Operating Officer (“the COO”) of the Foundation is responsible for its overall operational and financial leadership. As a trusted and strategic advisor to the President and Chief Philanthropy Officer, she/he plays an integral role in building and shaping the internal functions of the Foundation, which includes: direct oversight of the Foundation’s financial affairs; developing and implementing sound financial and information system practices; and ensuring the overall operational and financial effectiveness of the Foundation. She/he is accountable for financial and operational efficiencies and creating sophisticated reporting and tracking processes. The COO is a collaborative coach and mentor who understands the importance of how transparency, operational efficiency, financial accuracy and technology drive the Hospital’s investments, initiatives and deepen key donor relationships. With a focus on best-in-class governance and supporting an agenda of continuous improvement, she/he is an integral member of the Foundation’s executive team and will inspire and lead a senior team in operations, finance, human resources and information technology to support and enable the Foundation’s growth and transformation.


The ideal Chief Operating Officer is a highly visible, authentic and engaged leader with strong financial and business acumen and 10+ years of proven leadership experience building and developing high performance, cohesive teams. She/he is an experienced private or public sector finance and operations executive with exceptional communication and relationship building skills and proven leadership experience in growth and/or transformational environments. With the ability to resonate with a wide range of key internal and external stakeholders, including the Hospital and the St. Michael’s Foundation Board of Directors, the Chief Operating Officer ideally brings a deep understanding of the not-for-profit sector as well as donor and foundation market trends.
