The Canadian Red Cross is seeking a Senior Manager, Major Gifts to join the Philanthropy team for Western Canada and mobilize the power of humanity in Canada and around the world. The Senior Manager will be an experienced fundraising professional who will build relationships and secure philanthropic commitments from individuals and family foundations at the $10,000+ level. Based in our provincial headquarters in Burnaby, and reporting to the Director, Major Gifts and Campaigns, the Senior Manager will lead a team of three passionate major gifts fundraisers located across Western Canada.
The Red Cross is seeking an individual keen on supporting the development and management of the Major Gifts program across Western Canada. The Senior Manager will have the benefit of a collaborative and ambitious team of Major Gifts colleagues in Western Canada and nationwide as they work together to grow our sustained and predictable annual revenue from $60 million to $100 million by 2020.

Programs and Services
The Canadian Red Cross offers its services both in Canada and internationally; these are organized into two broad categories: Emergencies and Disasters; and Community Health and Wellness.
Our programs and services in these categories include:
- Emergencies and Disasters in Canada and Worldwide: Responds to the needs of communities devastated by disasters, conflict, and health emergencies. Provides emergency preparedness and training to mitigate the impact of disasters.
- Community Health Services in Canada: Supports Canadians to stay in their homes through access to local health services.
- Worldwide Health: Aims to reduce infant and maternal mortality rates through basic health intervention and training at the community level.
- First Aid, Swimming and Water Safety: The Red Cross manages the training and mentoring of hundreds of Red Cross certified contractors who provide direct First Aid, Swimming and Water Safety certifications in pool complexes and throughout the Lower Mainland.
- Violence Prevention: Provides training, awareness and education programs to build safer and resilient communities.
- International Humanitarian Law: Educates and disseminates the principles of international humanitarian law with government, academia, and youth.
- Finding Family-Restoring Family Links: Helps people in Canada re-establish contact with immediate family members after separation due to armed conflict, natural disaster, migration, and other humanitarian crises.
- Migrant and Refugee Services: Helps newcomers to Canada find resources, and administer the detention monitoring program.
Red Cross Programs and Services in BC and Yukon include:
- Health Equipment Loan Program: Lends a variety of health equipment to people, enabling individuals to remain at home longer, safely leave the hospital sooner, or spend their final days in familiar surroundings.
- Community Outreach: Aboriginal outreach services to 66 First Nations communities across BC.
- Injury Prevention: First Aid, Swimming and Water Safety programs.
- Violence Prevention: The BC and Yukon RespectED team provides extensive bullying prevention and leadership training to youth facilitators, empowering them to be leaders in their schools and communities. Canadian Red Cross BC and Yukon is proud to be a recipient of funds raised through Pink Shirt Day to support Bullying and Harassment Prevention Programs.
Over 2000 volunteers in BC and Yukon are crucial to the success of our programs and services, working side-by-side with staff in a variety of roles. Our extensive volunteer program incorporates position-specific training and extensive support to ensure a positive and fulfilling experience.

The Ideal Candidate
The ideal Senior Manager, Major Gifts will be:
- A seasoned major gifts professional with a proven track record of success working with individual donors and family foundations, ideally having personally closed gifts at the $10,000 level and above.
- A strong communicator with the ability to passionately share the story, programs, and priorities of the Canadian Red Cross.
- A natural coach and leader, able to get the best from staff and colleagues located across the country.
- Mission-driven, rallying the team to inspire donors to deepen their engagement with the Canadian Red Cross.
- A self-starter and solutions-focused individual, proactive in identifying and actioning opportunities.
- Experienced in engaging senior volunteers and organizational leaders in all aspects of major gift fundraising, including prospect identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship.
- Adaptable and flexible in nature, with the ability to thrive in ambiguity and an evolving complex national organization.
- Responsive and focused, understanding that global disasters and emergencies can immediately shift one’s priorities.
Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities
Major Gifts Fundraising
- Develops and manages a personal portfolio of individual and family foundation donors.
- Demonstrates a high-level of personal contact and activity with major gift donors and prospects.
- Cultivates relationships and moves donors through all stages of the donor cycle creating individual donor plans and associated strategies.
- Supports senior leadership, executives, and volunteers in the cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of major donors.
- Works closely with the Prospect Research and Major Gifts teams to identify prospects.
- Works collaboratively with the Philanthropy team to identify and determine leadership potential of prospective volunteers.
Staff and Volunteer Leadership
- Supports the recognition of volunteers in collaboration with Philanthropy team, and in alignment with Volunteer Resources guidelines.
- Supports the development and management of a high-performing team of Major Gifts staff.
- Provides guidance, coaching and oversight in the area of donor/prospect strategy and major gift solicitations.
- Oversees Major Gifts staff activity to ensure revenue targets are met.
- Provides ongoing feedback, conducts performance reviews in conjunction with Major Gifts leadership, and supports professional development of Major Gifts staff.
Strategy, Planning, and Reporting
- Contributes to the development of provincial Major Gifts revenue and expense budgets by conducting analysis and forecasting.
- Develops annual business plans in collaboration with Major Gifts leadership to meet revenue targets for Major Gifts activity in British Columbia.
- Contributes to the effectiveness of Major Gifts activity including regular monthly and quarterly reporting of key activity and financial indicators.
- Manages communications with team and assigned donors during times of disasters to share information and gain support.
- A strong background in relationship/partnership development and proven track record of delivering fundraising results.
- Strong leadership skills with ability to coach and direct a highly productive team.
- Results-driven work ethic coupled with analytic and project management skills.
- A strategic and creative thinker who works proactively, and can manage a diverse set of priorities.
- Excellent customer service skills in supporting partners, volunteers and donors.
- Strong communication skills (written and verbal), interpersonal skills, and excellent organizational skills.
- Ability to work in a fast paced environment with competing priorities.
- Strong computer skills including Microsoft Office and experience using a CRM database (Raiser’s Edge, ideally BlackBaud CRM).
- University degree in a relevant field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Ability to travel as needed.
- Ability to work non-traditional hours to execute donor events and meet the needs of donors, partners, and volunteers, and during times of a disaster response and/or appeal.
