Job Description

Food For The Poor of Canada is seeking a fundraising professional to provide leadership and expertise for our fundraising programs, with a specific focus on major-gifts and business development, in the role of Director of Development. You are interested in growing into executive leadership roles in the next few years. 

Food For The Poor of Canada, Inc. (FFPC) is a small and nimble charity that has the infrastructure of a large NGO. We work with established partners (Food For The Poor US, Food for the Poor Haiti and Food For The Poor Jamaica) to support humanitarian projects that create lasting impact. We build villages, homes, water wells, schools, and clinics and manage sustainability projects funded by FFPC donors. Our work also involves the distribution of goods to schools, orphanages, churches, hospitals, and community leaders that work directly with the people they serve.

Over the last 10 years FFPC and its donors have built 90 homes and 30 schools, as well as shipped $28 million worth of food, educational and medical supplies.

Building on 10 years of work, relationships and our recently launched campaign “It takes a village to build a village,” the Director of Development will be responsible for creating an annual strategic plan to elevate fundraising through setting clear goals and metrics for revenue development, as well as through volunteer and donor engagement. Reporting to the Executive Director and providing leadership to the growing fundraising team, the Director of Development will be a valued member of the senior leadership team, with the opportunity to grow in further leadership roles.

You are a team player and a positive individual who leads by example, an accomplished fundraising professional with major giving experience. You have applied strategic thinking to successfully grow a major gifts program, and a track record in securing gifts of $10,000 and above from corporations, individuals and family foundations. You are articulate, genuine, and a relationship builder with excellent communication skills – both written and verbal. 


The Director of Development will provide expertise and leadership to develop overarching annual plans based on best practice fundraising. With an “out the door” approach and an active presence in the community, the ideal candidate will be motivated to enhance current donor relationships and to explore new ways of securing our next generation of donors. An authentic and compelling storyteller, the Director of Development will proudly articulate for support and will exhibit great skill in expressing the various ways donors can partner in addressing poverty in the Caribbean and Latin America.

Reporting to the Executive Director, the Director of Development will be responsible for:

Strategy and Planning

  • Participate with the senior team in the strategic- and business-planning process
  • Develop strategies for building a competitive position for securing donations and maximizing giving opportunities, towards the achievement of short and long term goals
  • Develop and manage annual budget and operating plans, and targets for individuals, foundations, and corporations


  • Research, identify, and pursue opportunities for annual funding 
  • Execute, develop and lead fundraising campaigns
  • Build and maintain relationships with donors
  • Ensure the best possible stewardship of all donor relationships
  • Personally manage a portfolio of prospects and donors
  • In collaboration with the Executive Director, establish appropriate annual-fundraising goals, targets and metrics to ensure that all fundraising efforts are effective, efficient, and successful
  • Oversee the fundraising program, including major and planned giving, corporate and foundation giving
  • Write a variety of documents such as business plans, donor correspondence, contact reports, proposals and briefing notes
  • Assess, evaluate, and implement changes as needed, towards fundraising activities and practices
  • Ensure progress tracking, financial controls, and reporting systems are in place
  • Represent FFPC to our external community by being informed, articulate, and enthusiastic about our mission and work

Staff and Volunteer Leadership

  • Manage and provide leadership and oversight to the Fundraising team. Includes direction, support, coaching, and mentorship
  • Grow the leadership volunteer structure, and participate in the identification, recruitment, training, management, and stewardship of fundraising volunteers
  • In partnership with the Executive Director and Board of Directors, champion fundraising and a culture of philanthropy throughout the organization

Operational Management

  • Ensure the development and maintenance of policies, practices, and standards
  • Ensure all fundraising policies and practices continue to meet Canada Revenue Agency requirements

Required Qualifications and Competencies

  • Minimum of 5 - 7 years experience in fundraising
  • A university degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • CFRE designation a strong asset
  • Leadership, expertise and demonstrated success in fundraising
  • Proven experience developing and implementing strategies and plans resulting in increased revenue
  • Significant experience building integrated fundraising programs and writing annual business plans
  • Solid track record in soliciting and closing major gifts in the five- to six-figure range
  • Experience identifying and setting funding priorities and matching opportunities with donor interests
  • Demonstrated experience building budgets and monitoring financial progress
  • Experience developing and implementing custom- and mass-donor stewardship strategies
  • Excellent interpersonal and relationship-management skills
  • Demonstrated experience working effectively with board members, committees, and volunteers
  • Strong verbal, communication and writing skills, along with polished presentation skills
  • Ability to work well with a diverse group of people and build strong relationships
  • Experience leading and coaching a professional fundraising team and motivating performance standards
  • Ability to effectively manage and prioritize multiple projects and deadlines simultaneously
  • Consistently demonstrates the highest standards of professionalism, confidentiality, integrity, and sensitivity
  • Familiarity with the Caribbean and Latin America, its level of poverty and issues, an asset
  • Strong computer skills, including all of Microsoft Office
  • Experience using a CRM database
  • Capacity for travel with some evening and weekend work
