Description:  

Under the direction of the Director, Advancement & External Relations, the incumbent is responsible for supporting OISE communications by telling compelling and engaging stories.

Responsibilities include writing, editing, and producing key communication materials designed to inform internal and external stakeholders of the activities, research and achievements of the institute.

The incumbent produces news and feature stories for OISE’s website and e-newsletter, advancement and promotional materials, and utilises media channels to develop and enhance the institution’s profile. The incumbent builds and maintains relationships with faculty, students, alumni, donors and friends for the purpose of obtaining information and engaging target audiences.

The incumbent also supports the content and development of the OISE website redesign project. In addition, the incumbent will research and write materials designed to obtain donations and to raise awareness of the Institute and its fundraising campaigns among prospects, donors and other constituencies. This includes proposals, newsletter articles, media releases, case for supports, website content, reports, presentation materials, letters, outreach materials, etc.
 

Qualifications:  

Education:

Bachelor’s degree, preferably in public relations, communications, marketing, journalism, or an acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience.

Experience:
Minimum four (4) years of recent and related experience in advancement, communications, journalism, or marketing. Experience with writing articles (feature and news), reports, letters, and promotional and public relations material (brochures, newsletters, etc.). Demonstrated ability with WordPress and Drupal content management software (CMS). Experience managing content for websites and newsletters. Experience and a high degree of intuition with developing fundraising proposals and donor appreciation documents. Experience with advancement communications. Demonstrated experience and understanding of social and multimedia strategies, tools, channels, trends, and capabilities. Graphic editorial design experience and video production skills considered a desirable asset. Knowledge of the University’s practices and communications processes is also an asset.

Skills:
Excellent written and verbal communications skills. Proven journalistic skills, including investigating and pitching stories, executing interviews, and writing news and feature stories. Exceptional proofreading and editing skills with working knowledge of graphic design principles for web and print communication. Demonstrated advanced skills in MS Office (Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook). Strong problem solving skills and ability to deal with a variety of responsibilities, with interruptions. Familiarity with content management systems. Familiarity with web and social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram. LinkedIn). Knowledge of using design and video production software.

Other:
Demonstrates tact, diplomacy, and good judgment. Organizes work effectively and establishes priorities in a flexible way. Ability to work effectively in a team environment and deal effectively and professionally with faculty, students, alumni, staff, media, and other internal and external stakeholders. Demonstrates a high level of initiative, accuracy, and organizational ability.
