Job Description

You’re ready to make your mark

You're ready to make your mark, lead an organization’s philanthropy program to even more success, diversify its revenue streams and work with a new, enthusiastic Executive Director, engaged Board of Directors and fundraising committee as they begin their journey implementing a bold, new strategic plan.

Reporting to the Executive Director, you are a results-oriented professional who is passionate about social justice and is creative, collaborative, a self-starter and a team builder who can work with staff and volunteers.

In particular, we are seeking:

An experienced fundraiser: PWA’s signature special event raised close to $2million last year. You will bring skill, strategy and emotional intelligence to bear as you work with a group of independent, high-achieving volunteers and support and guide a team of staff with logistics, sponsorship and peer to peer fundraising. Your senior experience as a fundraiser, ideally paired with a CFRE designation, positions you to build on the foundation of the existing annual giving program and nascent bequest program. You understand and support the need for a strong infrastructure to underpin the success of fundraising program. You can see opportunities for new philanthropic programming and have the skills, personality and emotional intelligence to work with donors, volunteers, program staff, community partners, senior leadership and/or clients to develop the relationships needed for a sustainable fundraising program.

A skilled communicator: You know what it means to act as an ambassador for an organization, you’re comfortable speaking, networking and representing PWA. You have demonstrated your ability to distill organizational complexity into just a few sentences and to convey complex concepts to any audience. You have an eye for good design and for good copy. You know that communications and fundraising go hand-in-hand, and that in small organizations, everyone learns to do both. You’re excited about the opportunity to raise the profile of this vital organization, expanding our reach and enabling us to achieve more than ever before.

An agile strategist: You are passionate about strategic collaboration and finding ways to support and engage in shared success. You are curious, analytical and strategic, allowing you to see the big picture and your role in it. You like to be guided by strategic vision and principles, but are not so rigid as to let a moment pass you by because it wasn’t planned. You are able to build relationships that adapt and evolve as opportunities emerge.

An experienced leader: You are confident enough to lead by example and yet are humble enough to follow those who offer different skill sets – with both your staff and volunteers. You take your work seriously but not yourself. You have knowledge of board governance, especially as it relates to philanthropy. You are familiar with the fundraising landscape, as well as the regulatory framework. You’re a problem-solver and a strong team player with demonstrated experience leading, supporting and engaging staff in a small-shop environment. Numbers don’t scare you, and you secretly get a little excited about budgeting, financial analysis and database management. You know that success lies in the details as much as it does in the vision.

Enough about you, let’s talk about us

PWA exists to make sure no one in Toronto living with HIV/AIDS ever feels alone or unsupported. At PWA, people across Toronto living with HIV/AIDS (PHAs) can find support in a safe, welcoming environment.

It can be difficult to reach out for help. That’s why at PWA, we make sure that anyone who comes through the door can get help accessing the practical supports they need or get connected to other services elsewhere in the system without the sting of stigma or judgement they sometimes feel elsewhere.

With the recent implementation of a new donor database and an extensive effort in tidying and cleaning the data, we are ready to make donor-informed decisions to guide the future of the fundraising program.

The annual giving program is poised for growth with a newly developed bequest program and potential for growth in annual giving and major gifts. Community-based events play an important role in raising funds and engaging the voices and experience of people living with HIV/AIDS and the people who love them.

PWA is rooted in the principles of social justice and rests on a foundation of collaboration and partnership. People living with HIV/AIDS play a crucial role in the governance and operation of PWA.

PWA has the opportunity to make an impact like never before. We’re looking for the right person to help us get there.

OK, back to you

Thanks for taking the time to learn more about PWA.

We could list the many qualities and qualifications we’d like you to have and we could list the many accountabilities this role will have. But you’re a professional and you know what it takes to inspire people to want to support an organization based on social justice principles. And you know what is required beyond donor solicitations to build relationships and position an organization for success and growth.

Are you intrigued? Do you want to learn more? Please send your resume and letter of interest to anne@cathymann.ca by March 3, 2019 at 11:59pm.

If you’d like more information, reach out to anne@cathymann.ca and she can send you the Candidate Brief. If you’re the right person for this role, we want to speak with you and learn more about why this opportunity is right for both you and PWA. And we encourage you to send in your material as soon as possible, as we will be reviewing resumes as they arrive.

We are offering a unique opportunity to play a leadership role in a vital organization at a critical juncture in its history; to lead and work with a dynamic group of staff and volunteers who are passionate about their roles; to both support and guide the new, enthusiastic Executive Director and to collaborate with Board Directors who are dedicated to the success of the organization. Compensation will be negotiated, commensurate with experience.

All inquiries and applications will be held in the strictest confidence. We encourage qualified applicants living with HIV and from diverse backgrounds to apply and self-identify.
