Position Purpose summary:  

Reporting to the Divisional Director of Development, the Philanthropy Communications Specialist will work to retain, maintain and deepen life-long donor relationships through effective, strategic, donor-centered communications. The incumbent will work to create, implement and standardize print and digital Divisional donor-centered communication templates, reports and letters. This role will also work to create standardized major gift proposal that can be customized to donor’s unique interests for gifts of $100,000+, as well the solicitation of targeted family foundation for grant consideration at $10,000+.

 

Accountabilities:

  1. Donor-Centered Communications, Reports, and Promotional Materials:
  • Plan, develop creative content and produce both print and digital donor-centered communications and templates for the Division
  • Create, generate, and distribute strategic quarterly communication reports to existing donors intended to inspire and demonstrate the impact of philanthropic donations
  • Contribute to the development of annual mid to major level reports by customizing content/information and highlight points of interest to promote maintenance, retention and elevation of donor engagement
  • Promote and contribute to the culture of philanthropy and assist further the Divisional Development function’s goals in Ontario-Central East
  • Collaborate actively with the Social Service team to identify the appropriate representation of staff, Area Commanders, Officers and executives in donor communications, promotional materials and during meetings and/or events
  • Develop consistent messaging that supports and articulates the mission, vision and fundraising needs of the Salvation Army; ensuring that brand, quality, and consistency is upheld in all communication materials
  • Collaborate with marketing, digital and design teams (in-house and external suppliers) for special projects as required

 

  1. Standardized Major Gift Proposals, Foundation Applications, Templates and Divisional Communication Training:
  • Develop and deliver high quality, highly customized templates for proposals, solicitations, and stewardship materials for mid, major gift and legacy giving donors and collaborate and provide assistance to Advisors with customization, as required
  • In collaboration with other development staff, contribute in recognizing, and stewarding relationships for key stakeholders; working in partnership with Area Commanders, Officers, and ministry staff
  • Create and standardize major gift proposal templates which can be customized to donor’s unique interests for gifts of $100,000+
  • Submit funding applications to solicit private and public family foundations support for grants/gifts at $10,000 based on prioritized Divisionally approved goals and priorities
  • Provide training and mentorship to divisional employees on standardized practices for foundation, grant, and donor communications

 


CRITICAL RELATIONSHIP MANAGEMENT

Governance Boards and Councils:

  • This job does not require participation in any Boards or Councils


Internal:

  • Area Commanders, Officers, Ministry staff

  • Meets weekly with various ministry unit leads

  • Divisional Advisors and lay staff
     

External:

  • Frequently meets with individual and foundation donors

 

MANAGERIAL Leadership RESPONSIBILITY:

  • Reports directly to the Head of Divisional Stewardship

 

FINANCIAL AND MATERIALS MANAGEMENT:  

  • This role does not process any financial transactions and has no budget responsibilities but uses and maintains organization assets within established guidelines

 

WORKING CONDITIONS:  

  • Typical office environment with some travel to donor meetings
  • Incumbent is expected to be accessible with provided cell phone during business hours
  • May occasionally deal with disgruntled donors and families regarding complaints (i.e. mismanaged donor funds, inadequate/inaccurate reporting, etc.)
  • Overtime may be required to meet deadlines

  • Sitting for extended periods of time

  • Dexterity to operate a computer keyboard, mouse, and other devices and objects

Education, Qualifications and Certifications:  

  • Post-secondary degree or diploma in communications, marketing, journalism or similar

  • CFRE is a desired asset

  • Undergraduate degree or an advanced degree is an asset

 

Experience and Skilled Knowledge Requirements:

  • Understanding of marketing and communications principles, strategies and tactics

  • Experience conducting interviews and facilitating conversations to extract and uncover information necessary to develop communications materials

  • Experience working in a fast-paced development office; preferably in a capital campaign environment and contributing to departmental goals and objectives of $100M+

  • Working knowledge of the not-for-profit sector, including giving and fundraising trends, is a desired asset

  • 3 – 5 years of experience in a communications role or possesses a specialized science communication background; with experience in proposal development

 

Skills and Capabilities:

  • Strategic thinker with ability to break down complex ideas and present them in compelling, relevant, engaging, and meaningful ways that is clear and captivating to target audiences

  • Excellent project management skills, with ability to conceptualize, prioritize, develop,

    implement and manage diverse projects, while meeting multiple objectives and timeframes

    with multiple stakeholders

  • Excellent proven written and verbal communications skills with the ability to cater communication to varying audiences

  • Self-starter with strong computer and administrative skills

  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively

  • Meticulous with a commitment to superior quality with athorough knowledge of Canadian Press (CP) and Globe & Mail styles an asset

  • Excellent skills in applications such as Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint; Adobe InDesign experience preferred

  • Strong analytical abilities to identify audience motivations and interests and create effective and impactful messages and communication strategies to inspire, motivate, and persuade donors to continue/increase support

  • Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills with the ability to thrive in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment
