Job Description

Canadian Civil Liberties Association is Canada’s leading freedom-fighting NGO, since 1964.  Along with the ACLU, we’re part of a network of global-leading civil society groups, called INCLO.  CCLA intervenes in Canadian courts, testifies before our legislatures, advocates through all media, and engages in activism and outreach across Canada to ensure that liberties are protected  and the Charter of Rights and Freedoms is upheld.

We are recruiting a social-justice informed fundraiser who can provide fundraising leadership and hands-on implementation.

You are the right candidate for this job if you are a builder - growing a fundraising program from the ground-up. While the organization and its fundraising is not new, it requires fresh eyes, fresh energy and strong leadership. You are not afraid to roll-up your sleeves to get things done. No task is too big, or too small. This is a fast-paced environment where there is a balance between leveraging current events while planning long-term activities.

You thrive in an environment where every day is different, you’re a team player, you can handle multiple priorities, you’re detail-oriented and have an “all hands on deck” mentality. You’re hungry and humble: no task is beneath you. You are a big talent but seek more experience.

Working closely with and reporting to the Executive Director (the organizational lead on fundraising and communications) and part of a small but mighty team of staff and volunteers, you are the driving force behind fundraising and communications. Your primary task is fundraising; the secondary task is communications; the two tasks are intertwined.

  • A high-level fundraising strategy has been developed.  You improve and implement it: determine appropriate goals and metrics for fundraising programs; monitor and report on progress against goals and on the key activities of fundraising programs, initiatives, and staff.

  • Work with program staff to understand the programmatic work of CCLA and leverage that to ensure full integration and coordination of their programs to maximize donor engagement and fundraising results.

  • Ensure that all fundraising programs and activities fall within ethical, fiscal, and legal standards, and within CCLA’s policies.

  • Maintain relationships with other fundraising professionals to ensure ongoing knowledge of best practices and to benchmark the organization’s performance.

  • Prioritize and manage all fundraising activities, including major gifts, monthly giving, corporate giving, foundation support, community giving, planned giving, e-philanthropy and events.

  • Work closely with the Executive Director to manage and solicit a portfolio of major gift prospects.

  • Manage day-to-day donation processing and financial reporting

  • Lead the development and implementation of stewardship strategies and practices for all fundraising programs.

  • Use best practices in donor reporting and emerging technology to demonstrate the impact of giving to steward all donors

Media Relations

  • The media spokespeople for CCLA are experienced and self-sufficient, so you will be managing media influencers and sources for CCLA and managing media requests.  You will help us earn media and mentions in print, radio, TV and online.

  • Communications liaison for the Canadian Cross-Border Legal Coalition (CCBLC) and the International Network for Civil Liberties Organizations (INCLO).

  • Write and distribute media products and prepare information for media kits.  Longer term, you (possibly) broaden and maintain effective working relationships with local and national media representatives, including cultivating media contacts, pitching stories, and arranging interviews.

Online and Social Media

  • Manage and maintain CCLA’s website: adding content and updating current information.

  • Manage and collect content for various newsletters and e-publications (mostly automated by Meltwater); design & distribute to CCLA’s network of members and supporters

  • Implement social and online media strategies and tactics for the organization’s campaigns

  • Uphold the organization's brand image and serve as the brand “voice” on social media.

  • Manage the organization’s social media strategy by expanding its presence and increasing visibility, awareness and traffic across various platforms.

  • Maintain analytics for social media and website including: tracking traffic, engagement, followers, likes, shares, behaviour, audience, user visits, sessions by city/country etc.

  • Uphold communications calendar of activities, goals, evaluation, budget, timelines, events, social media, newsletters, national days and other important dates

  • Notify other staff when certain articles are published that we would like to comment on and coordinate statement or other action needed

Programs used

You’re fluent in Office 365, Slack, Constant Contact, Wordpress, and you’ll pick up quickly Little Green Light, Canva, Event Brite. You’re comfortable on Twitter, FB, Instagram, Hootsuite/equivalent and Reddit.

  • A combination of education, work/volunteer experience and lived experience that show a commitment to fundraising as a tool for social justice

  • Minimum of five years (successful) generalist fundraising experience, including annual giving, events, corporate giving, grants, major gifts and bequests.

  • A track record of getting things done with limited resources

  • A fearless passion for human rights issues

  • Exemplary planning, multi-tasking and time management skills; you meet all deadlines

  • Discretion and confidentiality

  • High level verbal and written communication skills
