Job Description

Grand River Hospital Foundation (GRHF) supports the financial needs of Grand River Hospital (GRH), one of Ontario’s largest and most unique community hospitals. GRH is a key partner in health sciences learning and has a rapidly growing role in academic research while providing compassionate, innovative, quality care to more than 700,000 residents of Waterloo Region, Guelph and Wellington County, and serving a natural catchment area of over 1 million residents. Situated in one of the largest and fastest growing regions of Ontario and one of the world’s most innovative research and commercialization technology hubs, GRH is strategically focused on enabling the Region’s pillars of innovation, education and collaboration.  A testament to its success is its recent recognition as one of the five safest hospitals in Canada.

In the last few years, through the generosity of donors, GRHF was able to provide $8 million per year for patient care equipment needs, capital building projects and renovations, as well as local clinical requirements, and health research and education. GRHF is actively partnering with GRH to address the significant capital project requirements that will ultimately impact the future direction of the organization and, most importantly, improve patient care. GRHF’s vision is to inspire a philanthropic environment where everyone in the community understands and passionately supports exceptional health care. The investments that donors have and continue to make into new facilities, equipment and programs at GRH have helped to improve care and bring advanced new procedures closer to home. With an unwavering commitment to improving the patient experience, there is an opportunity to transform care delivery through enabling technological breakthroughs and advancements.

The Position

Reporting to the GRHF’s Board of Governors, the President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) will lead GRHF at one of the most monumental and transformative periods in its history. As GRHF’s chief relationship builder, the CEO will build donor relationships, ensure the achievement of financial objectives and effectively lead several multi-faceted fundraising programs. This role will provide innovative leadership and strategic talent management to the professional GRHF staff and will inspire a culture that reflects compassion, the drive to improve clinical care, and the achievement of milestones that strive for unprecedented success. As a member of GRH’s Senior Leadership Team, the GRHF CEO will work in close partnership with the President and CEO at GRH and the Hospital’s administrative and clinical leadership teams to strengthen linkages between GRHF and the Hospital that can unleash patient care breakthroughs and establish new benchmarks of clinical excellence. In addition, the GRHF CEO will work closely with other local hospital foundations to strengthen collaborative efforts to increase joint fundraising initiatives in order to deliver the best possible health care to the residents of Kitchener-Waterloo.

Key leadership initiatives for the new President and CEO will be to:

  • Action and build upon a dynamic campaign strategy through the development of a high performing team-based culture focused on the execution of philanthropic initiatives and the cultivation of new partnerships.
  • Create an outstanding work environment for staff and volunteers that generates a supportive culture which will empower GRHF to exceed key fundraising targets and program development milestones.
  • Lead the creation and execution of a comprehensive plan for revenue growth to support GRH’s priorities and other key business ventures and initiatives.
  • Provide transformational leadership that elevates GRHF’s standard of performance and ensures a robust approach to the establishment of new programs, partnerships and performance targets that, in turn, build greater visibility, influence and engagement amongst key stakeholders and partners.
  • Build strong and collaborative partnerships with other local hospital foundations and community partners to explore collaborative projects, initiatives and joint planning opportunities.

The ideal candidate will have fund development accomplishments that include exemplary executive leadership, with a track record of turning a vision into reality. S/he must demonstrate an inspiring and empowering leadership style that is focused on donor development and stewardship, the creation of alliances and partnerships, and performance excellence. With a proactive, forward-thinking mindset and entrepreneurial spirit, the new President and CEO will have proven skills in the execution of a strong business and strategic plan. This leadership role requires someone that will promote an innovative culture of philanthropy and a relentless commitment to aspirational fundraising goals, while strengthening strategic partnership opportunities with other local hospital foundations and fostering collaborative efforts with community partners. Additionally, the candidate will be a “gifted change leader”, with a demonstrated ability to lead, and vigilantly seek out new opportunities and leverage connections.
