Job Description

Since 2009, the Roberta Bondar Foundation has been addressing the growing nature deficit in society through its programs that use photography to actively engage people of all ages in our natural environment. Its goal is to help cultivate in all ages a sense of awe, respect and appreciation of the natural world and all its biodiversity to be better equipped to influence positive change. Co-founded as a Canadian charity (Registration #80743 8759 RR0001) by Dr. Roberta Bondar, the signature programs of the Foundation include: Travelling Photographic Exhibitions on biodiversity; the Bondar Challenge, a hands-on, field-based experiential learning program that promotes environmental awareness and education; research; and a thought leadership speaker's series in various forms. Position Overview:

As the lead on fundraising for the Foundation, your primary responsibility will be to create and execute a fundraising strategy that will enable the Foundation to fulfill its mission. Working closely with the Board of Directors you will be responsible for cultivating, soliciting and stewarding donors. You will have strong knowledge and background of working with individuals, foundations, and corporations. You will have exceptional proposal writing and research skills. A good knowledge of event planning and coordination is an asset to the position. As the sole fundraiser you must be able to work independently with excellent time management skills and the ability to juggle multiple priorities; and be a self-starter who is driven and focused. 

Immediate Focus of Primary Responsibilities:

  • In the short term, in each of the next three years, work to develop and implement a plan to raise a minimum of $250k each year
  • Work with Board members and other volunteers to leverage a range of fundraising and promotional opportunities as an integral part of both short and long-term planning and execution  
  • Assist in the development of an annual initiative that raises resources for a basic infrastructure reserve fund to support the core activities of the Foundation in the future. 

Other Position Responsibilities: 

  • Support the development and implementation of a diverse mid to long-term fundraising plan for the Foundation that will align with the Foundation’s objective to raise $2M over the next 5 to 7 years
  • Work in collaboration with the Foundation’s Chair, Board and volunteers to use the Foundation’s case for support to develop proposals for prospects, Foundations and other sources of funds, ensuring alignment with the Foundation’s goals and objectives, and that meets the needs of its donors
  • Oversee and execute effective stewardship strategies to strengthen donor relationships: ensure gifts are processed appropriately with thank you calls, letters and tax receipts that are executed promptly by working collaboratively with other support staff involved, and develop stewardship reports/follow up letters that are issued on a timely basis
  • Prepare donor correspondence: thank you letters, updates, proposals, gift agreements, etc.
  • Prepare donor Call Reports in a timely fashion (48 hours after a conversation) to track all intelligence, outcomes and actions required
  • Provide strategic advice and support including monthly reports to the Board of Directors as it relates to fundraising activities and potential opportunities
  • Provide professional volunteer management for fundraising volunteers including preparation and the research for briefing notes to support volunteer call activity
  • Work independently to set personal goals, monitor work and evaluate results to ensure that the Foundations fundraising targets are being met
  • Participate in and support the organization of special fundraising assignments and events
  • Manage the overall relationship with relevant advisory board members involving staff and volunteer leaders as appropriate; help develop and support a fundraising support group/committee to help open doors and create entry points for financial support and the development of strategic partnerships
  • As a result of identified funding opportunities, work with the Board as necessary to determine alignment with mission and program
  • Act as an ambassador in the community, positively representing the Foundation
  • Operate within the culture and core values of the organization to foster an inclusive, respectful workplaceResearch dimensions of the role:
  • Proactively identify new prospects and carry out execution of proposal development and prospect activities
  • Undertake prospect research (individual, corporate, foundation, agency) as a priority and ongoing task 
  • Work with the Board to identify new fundraising opportunities

Cultivation, Solicitation & Stewardship dimensions of the role:

  • Participate actively in the moves management process to ensure progress for cultivation to effective solicitation and stewardship
  • Support and work with Board Members and other volunteers to identify new prospects and make calls
  • Cultivate prospects based on research of prospects and partners
  • Plan, write and execute proposals, and targeted communications for potential and existing donors
  • Pursue and attend meetings with prospects to solicit support independently or with Founder, Chair Board members or volunteer as appropriate

Administrative dimensions of the role: 

  • Initiate and maintain prospect donor database and proposal/report management
  • Prepare tracking reports of activity for chair, board and volunteer committees
  • Foster collaborative and/or mentoring relationships with other RBF staff and volunteers
  • Set up calls with prospects for discussion and determination of interest and solicitation of funds

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of related education and business experience – preference in Fundraising, Philanthropy, marketing or equivalent 
  • CFRE preferred or demonstrated commitment to obtain this designation
  • Ability to use sound judgment and maintain discretion and confidentiality at all times
  • Demonstrated tact, diplomacy and creativity and problem-solving capabilities
  • Proven and successful track record of achievement, most particularly related to fundraising and successful proposal development 
  • Excellent administrative skills and organizational abilities including solid working experience using a Mac platform and relevant technology such as Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint/Keynote, Outlook and Raiser’s Edge or equivalent as growth occurs and necessitates
  • Self-motivated and able to work from the Foundation office in Toronto
  • A valid driver’s licence and access to a vehicle is ideal or high comfort with public forms of transit 
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively work with senior volunteers for fundraising

Related Experience

Preferred two to three-years’ experience in the philanthropic sector if full time; if part-time, an evident track record in the philanthropic or business sector 

An interest in the environment

Demonstrated interest in fundraising and/or annual fund development ideally with some experience in prospect research, proposal development and forging relationships with donors and volunteers
