Position Overview

This is an excellent opportunity to join a growing fundraising team within a highly respected environmental NGO. You’ll have a great deal of autonomy with lots of opportunities to develop your skillset and work with a wide variety of prospect types.

The Associate Director, Strategic Partnerships in Ontario will lead the provincial fundraising efforts in support of the policy teams working in Toronto and Ottawa. In addition, the Associate Director will also work in collaboration with the Director, Strategic Partnerships in developing a diversified funding portfolio which includes public and private grants and contracts, giving campaigns, online giving and other suitable funding initiatives. The incumbent will work with other team members to develop and implement workplans that align with Pembina’s fund development strategies to ensure targets are met and revenue grows in a sustainable way. The Strategic Partnership team is responsible for generating the operating funding for the Pembina Institute, currently about $5 million per year. The team consists of six people, including Associate Directors of Strategic Partnerships based in Vancouver and Calgary.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Lead Ontario-focused fundraising efforts in support of Pembina’s fund development strategy and agenda developed by our leadership and policy staff, by formulating and implementing engagement and solicitation.initiatives that align with Pembina’s fund development strategies
  • Develop workplans for implementing engagement and solicitation initiatives
  • Contribute to the development of a more predictable and reliable revenue stream by growing the number of multi-year and recurring sources of revenue
  • Research potential donors to gain insight into needs, beliefs and donation habits to understand how to position our organization to them
  • Assist in brainstorming and creating new methods to raise funds for the organization, supporting the development of a healthy diversified funding portfolio that includes public and private grants and contracts, giving campaigns, online giving and other suitable funding initiatives
  • Ensure that the cultivation and solicitation of prospects that are national in scope (or have interests outside of Ontario) are coordinated across the organization, and that information is shared within the team
  • Track all prospect engagement and communications and ensure detailed records are kept in our fundraising/CRM database (Salesforce)
  • Facilitate maintenance of strategic partnership relationships for sustainability of fund development portfolio
  • Prepare written materials and other materials (proposals, presentations, reports) as required to fulfil this role, with the support of the Pembina Institute’s communication team

This role is responsible largely for gifts in excess of $25,000; however, opportunities to work on gifts well in excess of this level will arise.

You’ll be based in our Toronto office and when required will travel to meet prospects and donors, and to support policy staff establishing new or building existing relationships. You’ll report to the Director, Strategic Partnerships and have some administrative support from the Toronto-based Fundraising Coordinator, and the communications team.

Skills and Qualifications

  • A university undergraduate degree or higher is preferred; however, an equivalent combination of education and experience would be acceptable
  • Post-secondary training in non-profit management / fund development is an asset
  • Minimum five years of dedicated fundraising experience in the non-profit/ENGO sector with proven track record of success especially within the Ontario province
  • A proven ability to “close deals” is essential, along with experience in building and maintaining long-term relationships with donors
  • Demonstrated experience developing a diversified funding portfolio which includes public and private grants and contracts, giving campaigns, online giving and other suitable funding initiatives
  • Strong planning and organization skills, appropriate attention to detail and the ability to conduct yourself with a high degree of diplomacy and tact
  • Proactive, self-motivated and results-oriented, with the ability to take initiative and work independently
  • Exemplary written and verbal communication abilities, public speaking skills, and outgoing, yet poised personality
  • Ability to articulate the values and mission of the Pembina Institute and discuss climate science and social policy cogently with experts in the field
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to build effective working relationships with prospects/donors, policy staff, and wide variety of individuals working with the Pembina Institute
  • Knowledge of research and prospecting techniques
  • Proficiency in Excel, MS Office, and CRM software
  • Flexibility and ability to work under pressure
  • Strong problem-solving skills, a professional with innovative skills
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and respond positively to change
  • Familiarity with current requirements of the Canada Revenue Agency for charities and non-profit organizations is highly desirable
  • Demonstrated commitment to sustainability and social change through educational, professional, and/or volunteer experiences
