Position Summary:
The Associate Director, Development plays a critical role in driving the hospital’s fundraising efforts and ensuring the long-term sustainability of our organization. The Associate Director, Development is responsible for expanding and creating a new portfolio of donors, developing and implementing strategies to build relationships with new and existing donors and driving the acquisition of major gifts in the $100,000 – $1,000,000+ range.
The Associate Director, Development is responsible and accountable for the development, expansion and growth of fundraising revenue as well as providing professional volunteer management for fundraising volunteers. They will play an integral role in leading the Robotic Expansion campaign, a Surgery program at the forefront of innovation in Canada that is entirely donor funded.

Key Responsibilities: Fundraising
- Identify, cultivate and manage a portfolio of high net worth donors and prospects
- Identify influencers who can help engage the individuals, mapping them to strategic priorities and connecting the individuals with medical leaders who will describe the scope of the work in their area of interest
- Establish new program(s) / initiatives that will serve the Community and the Hospital’s Strategic Plan
- Launch program(s) based on best practices, working with the healthcare organization’s leaders to prepare them for interactions with prospective philanthropists
- Develop and sustain a robust knowledge of hospital-wide funding priorities and a general knowledge of the programs of care funding priorities, keep abreast of the organizational priorities, programs, personalities and events
- Lead and advance all strategies for these identified individuals by collaborating with the healthcare leaders, engaging the prospective donors individually or with an influencer and supporting the conversations in order to lean towards a transformational gift
- Present complex funding opportunities to prospective donors in person and in writing
- Strategic travel as needed to further fundraising strategies, sometimes in partnership with the Foundation President and CEO and/or other hospital leaders to cultivate and connect prospects
- Prepare and review research & briefing notes to support volunteer call activity and to ensure fundraising volunteers remain engaged and motivated.

Key Responsibilities: Planning & Reporting
- Participate in monthly reviews with direct report to review fundraising achievements, monitor fundraising productivity and identify issues that require additional support to advance fundraising success and/or areas where course correction is required.
- Prepare Call Reports in a timely fashion (48 hours) to collect all intelligence, outcomes and actions required.
- Update Raiser’s Edge in a timely fashion to reflect all fundraising activity including Call Report outcomes, actions, notes, intelligence, relationship connections and create new Raiser’s Edge proposals as required.
- Monitor and proactively follow up on R/E Open Actions Report items.
- Manage pipeline and forecast, updating proposal details whenever new intelligence is obtained.
- Develop strategies and tactics that drive fundraising opportunities and growth; provide input to the Foundation’s Operating Plan, in alignment with the Foundation’s Strategic Plan.
- Create annual and quarterly fundraising plans to establish fundraising strategies, set goals and objectives, direct fundraising tactics and monitor fundraising productivity.
Key Responsibilities: Professional Development
- Identify skill gaps and create annual professional development plans – for self and staff – and participate in external professional development opportunities.
Other
- Provide coaching and training for Development Team colleagues, as requested.
- Participate in Development Team strategy, prospect clearance and pipeline management meetings.
- Participate in Foundation events for cultivation, stewardship and fundraising purposes including weeknight and weekend events.
Skills/Knowledge:
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of related education and business experience.
- CFRE preferred, or demonstration of commitment to obtain CFRE designation.
- Seven years progressive fundraising responsibility in major/leadership/principal gifts, with demonstrated track record of soliciting and closing six and seven-plus figure gifts
- Demonstrated tact, diplomacy and creativity and problem solving capabilities.
- Ability to use sound judgment and maintain discretion and confidentiality at all times.
- Strong interpersonal, organizational and analytical skills.
- Excellent administrative skills including solid working experience using relevant technology such as Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Raiser’s Edge.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities from different sources enhanced by problem solving capabilities.
- Strong customer service oriented approach complemented by excellent organizational and time management abilities.
- Ability to use sound judgment and maintain discretion and confidentiality at all times.
- A valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle is required.
Note: Flexibility is required as this position may be required to work some weekends and evenings.
