Reporting to the Vice President, Philanthropy, the Associate Director, Philanthropy (AD) is a passionate philanthropy advocate responsible for setting the strategic direction and priorities for engagement of donors at the major gift level ($100,000+ donations). The AD will create and implement fundraising strategies with donors and potential donors of ROM, carrying a personal portfolio of approximately 75 high net worth donors and potential donors. As a member of the philanthropy team, the AD will play a key role in the success of our comprehensive campaign as we seek to raise funds to support the ROM’s exciting priorities of infrastructure, endowment, emerging curatorial and program priorities, and core operations.

ROM Governors is recruiting a fundraising professional known for curiosity, skilled and artful engagement; someone who listens and quickly grasps donor drivers and interests and is able to synthesize information into a solid relationship plan. You are a passionate, hands-on major giving fundraiser who believes in the transformative powers of Museums and philanthropy. You are known for being highly collegial, strategic and comfortable working in a complex and fast-paced environment. You are a positive-thinker and role model who demonstrates leadership, collaboration, respect and excellence.

Primary Objective of Position

Reporting to the VP, the AD is responsible for managing a portfolio of potential major gift donors, and developing and implementing plans for cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of such gifts.

The AD raises funds to support ROM’s emerging program priorities, projects and core operations and works with museum partners, board members and others to facilitate strategic philanthropy.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

Donor Relationship Management

  • Manages a personal portfolio of approximately 75 potential donors annually. This will involve planning, developing, and overseeing customized cultivation, solicitation and stewardship strategies for individuals, corporations, and foundations, and working collaboratively to plan and execute targeted cultivation face to face visits. Plan and coordinate cultivation tours, visits, and meetings with staff and volunteers for donors and potential donors.
  • Correspond daily with ROM donors by email, telephone and in person calls. Ensure exceptional level of cultivation and stewardship through communications to donors.
  • Actively track actions related to potential donors and oversee the processing of gifts and stewardship of active major gift donors; ensuring donors receive correspondence, reports, and updates in a timely and professional manner.
  • Work collaboratively with prospect management (including research, rating, assignments, and tracking cultivation and solicitation activities) and stewardship (including donor relations, recognition systems and stewardship events) for all potential and current donors in accordance with a sequence and time frame that sustains fundraising momentum and achieves specified objectives.
  • Ensure the highest level of accuracy in all major gift data in our CRM (Raiser’s Edge NXT), manual tracking documents, briefing notes, donor correspondence and gift agreements.

Principal and Major Gifts Strategy Support

  • In collaboration with the VP and other philanthropy team members, develop and execute philanthropic strategies for major gift donors to raise funds for the ROM’s priorities.
  • In collaboration with other ROM Governors staff, the AD will convert ROM priorities into action plans and gift opportunities that match donor interests.
  • Work with volunteers willing to engage and introduce other potential supporters, encourage them to talk about their giving and its impact, and involve them in ongoing work of the major gifts team. Identify new volunteers for cultivation.

Team Integration

  • All staff share responsibility for the overall success of ROM Governors. The incumbent must be familiar with all funding opportunities and levels of support, work collaboratively and maintain a positive working environment with all internal stakeholders.
  • Participation in additional events managed by other Governors departments is expected, as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Minimum of 3 years direct experience building donor relationships and personally closing gifts in the five-figure (or higher) range.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills and professional presence necessary to interact with donors, patrons, senior volunteers, senior Museum staff and other stakeholders.
  • A demonstrated ability to identify and implement major gift strategic planning and solicitation strategies in support of funding priorities.
  • Basic familiarity and appreciation of the mission, purpose, and values of the Royal Ontario Museum and particularly its foundation. Knowledge of, and experience with, the Toronto philanthropic community desired.
  • Exceptional and proven oral and written communication skills.
  • Competence in a variety of computer applications, including database, spreadsheet and word processing programs. Experience with prospect and donor management fundraising software. Experience with RE or RE NXT is preferred.
  • Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information appropriately and with discretion
  • A flexible schedule which allows for multiple after-hours events and meetings.
