About the Role
As an integral member of the Major and Estate Giving Team, our Development Associate will contribute to the development and implementation of successful major gift fundraising initiatives at the level of $50,000 and up. The Development Associate will report directly to one Director, Major Gifts with a dotted line to at least one other Director, Major Gifts.
We are seeking someone who is proactive, professional and enthusiastic about working collaboratively. The successful candidate will be mature, energetic and versatile with excellent attention to detail. They will be a skilled writer, communicator and relationship-builder that is able to manage multiple, competing priorities for a busy Major Gifts team.
The ideal candidate enjoys the challenge of working in a vigorous, ambitious fundraising environment with responsibility for a wide range of assigned duties and projects.
This role requires strong administrative and organizational skills to track and complete assigned tasks and maintain up-to-date prospect/donor information. Candidates must have demonstrated experience in related administrative and/or fundraising roles and a strong interest in the field of major gifts.
In addition, the Development Associate will be called on to assist others in the department and across the whole Foundation from time-to-time and must be comfortable contributing as an active team member.
Interaction with Cancer Centre staff, fundraising volunteers, and Foundation colleagues will be ongoing. Experience with advanced fundraising systems, like Blackbaud CRM, is an asset.
You will:
Assist Directors, Major Gifts in development-related activities as assigned, including:
Donor Strategy and Implementation
- Work with the Directors to create solicitation and stewardship strategies for current and prospective major gift donors
- Draft briefings and/or speaking notes for staff and volunteers in preparation for donor and volunteer calls
- Request research profiles, funding priority approvals, proposals, donor agreements, and stewardship reports
- Plan and execute complex donor tours, meetings and visits
- Follow up with donors regarding pledged donations
- Respond to inquiries from donors, and problem solve as necessary.
Communications
- Assist in developing and delivering presentations
- Assist in the development of written proposals and reports
- Write personalized donor letters and other correspondence/reports/materials
- Respond to internal and external requests for information from colleagues, cancer centre staff, donors and volunteers.
Cancer Centre Staff Relationships
- In collaboration with Directors, Major Gifts, build meaningful relationships with select clinician partners and Cancer Centre staff, including attending and actively participating in meetings
- Develop and maintain a strong knowledge of the Cancer Centre and assigned site group’s research and priorities
- Prepare agendas, take notes and make recommendations, including strategy and next steps, during meetings with Cancer Centre staff.
Operations and Systems Management
- Navigate donor database and request lists and reports
- Help ensure integrity of database and donor data
- Notify appropriate Cancer Centre staff when donations are received and provide reminders about promised deliverables and timelines, etc.
- Support Directors with prospect pipeline management and monitoring.

- Minimum 3 years of experience in fundraising or administrative coordination/ support
- Deadline and results oriented, with excellent attention to detail and accuracy

- Evidence of leadership and initiative, tact, diplomacy and curiosity
- Demonstrated ability to work in a collaborative manner with peers, colleagues and volunteers
- Ability to work in a results-oriented environment
- Demonstrate a high level of ethics in fundraising
- Computer literacy: Microsoft Office (Word, Excel and PowerPoint), database software and spreadsheet programs, familiarity and aptitude with the Blackbaud CRM donor database is a significant asset
- Experience in a large, complex, not-for-profit healthcare organization and/or in a Major Gifts capacity, is an asset
- University degree or equivalent experience.
