To help fulfill its mission, LOFT is hiring a Director of Development.
Job Summary
The Director of Development plays a pivotal role in supporting LOFT Community Services’ Development & Communications department. Their primary responsibilities include managing and coordinating major gift fundraising activities to generate new revenue and maintain donor relationships. They are tasked with executing strategic fundraising initiatives, engaging senior staff and volunteers, and ensuring the effective stewardship of donors.
To excel in this role, the incumbent must possess advanced skills in donor cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship, as well as proficiency in CRM software for managing donor data and strategies. The individual should be capable of independently developing and implementing fundraising plans, demonstrating a high degree of organizational aptitude and resourcefulness, while consistently meeting revenue targets in a dynamic environment. Furthermore, the incumbent should be prepared to collaborate on special projects related to LOFT’s fundraising efforts
LOFT’s Development team is responsible for securing the financial resources and capital to support the organization’s Vision and Mission. Through fundraising campaigns, grant writing, donor relations, major gift cultivation, marketing communications, and event planning, the team builds and nurtures relationships with donors, foundations, and businesses to generate funds that enable the organization to operate and provide initiatives that support the needs of our most vulnerable citizens. The department works closely with the CEO, Board of Directors, and Fundraising Committee to communicate the organization’s goals and impact and encourage growth and success.
What You Will Do
Major Gift Fundraising
- Direct major giving activities with a focus on new revenue generation.
- Develop and maintain a donor portfolio capable of significant contributions of $15.00 or more.
- Personally conduct virtual and in-person cultivation meetings, solicitation calls, and stewardship activities.
- Develop and implement cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship strategies for each donor.
- Strategically involves and supports senior staff and volunteers in cultivating, soliciting, and stewardship.
- Identify recruit, onboard, and support senior volunteer solicitors.
- Collaborate with volunteers, colleagues, and program staff to identify and cultivate new prospects.
- Work with the Senior Development Coordinator to create compelling proposals and reports.
- Identify and qualify new donor prospects.
- Collaborate with the Manager of Strategic Partnerships and Grants on joint activities.
- Efficiently capture strategies, plans, and contact reports and moves management in Raisers Edge (CRM database).
- With the support of the Senior Development Coordinator, develops and manages a portfolio of donors on behalf of senior fundraising volunteers:
- Manages donor relationships, provides briefing materials, meeting materials, and call reports, and supports proposals when assigned.
- Prepares, writes, and submits proposals, reports, and other correspondence.
- Research prospective funders and maintain an active list to secure additional partners and create a portfolio/pipeline.
- Schedules cultivation, solicitation, and donor stewardship meetings.
- Maintains solicitation calendar to ensure that proposals and reports are submitted on time for donors.
Financial and Operational Planning & Reporting
- Collaborate with the VP of Development & Communications to develop annual budgets and forecasts.
- Develop the major gifts operational plan within the broader development strategy.
- Ensure the delivery of a donor-centric major gift program.
- Provide input on the major gift and campaign pipeline analysis to identify risks and opportunities.
- Support innovation in major gift and campaign fundraising efforts.
General Responsibilities
Leadership:
- Lead and develop direct reports to maximize productivity and employee satisfaction.
- Ensure staff development and performance goals are met.
- Build effective relationships with program staff and ambassadors as a development team representative.
- Handle ad hoc tasks that may arise, demonstrating flexibility and a quick response.
- Promotes and demonstrates the purpose and mission of the organization within the workplace and the CCO community.
Supervision:
- Provides direct supervision, mentoring, coaching and performance evaluation to Manager, Grants & Strategic Partnerships and Senior Development Coordinator.
- Directly responsible for providing orientation, training, supervision and evaluations of assigned employees.
What You Bring
Must Haves
- Post-secondary education in development, marketing, communications, or equivalent experience.
- Seven or more years of experience in fundraising, with a strong focus on major gifts.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite and Microsoft Office Suite and fundraising software, preferably Blackbaud products.
- Commitment to LOFT’s mission of serving people with complex health challenges, addictions, and poverty.
- Proven experience with antiracist and DEI practices.
- Excellent written and spoken communication abilities.
- Strong collaborative approach and superb people skills.

- Excellent customer service skills for supporting partners, volunteers, and donors.
- Discretion with sensitive and confidential information.
- High proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, experience with fundraising software, preferably Blackbaud products, and a demonstrated ability to learn new software applications as required.
