Position Summary

Reporting to the Philanthropy Director, Legacy Gifts & Estates, the Legacy Giving Officer will manage and build a portfolio of engaged planned giving prospects and donors, to ensure a strong base of ongoing financial support for Sunnybrook priority projects and initiatives. They will be responsible for cultivation and stewardship of donors in their pipeline, and will also support the development and implementation of annual and long-range projects to build Planned Giving awareness and education. The ideal candidate will be a highly collaborative person, possess strong organizational skills, and will enjoy interacting with donors, physicians, staff and grateful patients.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The following list represents the core essential duties and job specifications of the Legacy Giving Officer role. Other duties may be assigned as required by the Foundation.

Legacy Donor Relationship Management

  • Personally manage a portfolio of legacy donors through the donor life cycle;
  • With support from the Philanthropy Director, Legacy Gifts & Estates, implement strategies and activities to build your pipeline of legacy donors and prospects, such as through telemarketing and email campaigns;
  • Respond to inquiries through mailings, phone calls, emails and conduct personal cultivation and stewardship visits as required;
  • Work cross functionally with Foundation colleagues to identify new legacy giving prospects;
  • Identify legacy donors with the capacity to make current mid-level and major gifts. Work with current legacy donors to increase and augment their legacy gifts;
  • Work with the Estate Administration Officer to finalize the realization of active estates, as needed;
  • Work with Hospital stakeholders and Philanthropy Directors to understand programmatic content, strategic priorities and initiatives;
  • Maintain accuracy of all active donor files including all related donor record administration, briefing notes, and contact reports;

 Stewardship

  • Lead the execution of the Kilgour Legacy Society Stewardship Program to engage and retain confirmed Sunnybrook legacy donors
  • Lead execution of meetings and events related to legacy donor stewardship;
  • Collaborate with Foundation colleagues in Community Giving, Communications and Stewardship to develop marketing materials and tactics that promote and celebrate confirmed legacy gifts through Foundation internal and external channels.

 Additional Functions

Including but not limited to:

  • Act as internal resource on legacy gifts and estate planning for Foundation staff and Volunteers;
  • Build and maintain relationships with allied professionals;
  • With the Philanthropy Director, Legacy Gifts & Estates, support marketing and cultivation projects to continue to grow Planned Giving pipeline and awareness, including cultivation newsletters, estate planning seminars, and cultivation events;
  • Maintain current knowledge of legacy and estate administration trends through networking, research, and professional development

Qualifications and Competencies

  • University/College degree, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 4+ years of experience in fundraising, including direct experience in securing legacy gifts through relationship-based fundraising, and building new relationships with prospects, donors and volunteers.
  • Demonstrated experience with promoting and securing bequests, gifts of life insurance, retirement funds, and charitable remainder trusts.
  • Experience in a healthcare setting considered an asset.
  • Demonstrated experience handling estates from notification to completion, and working closely with donors and professional advisors to complete their planned gifts.
  • Excellent working knowledge of Raiser’s Edge.
  • Advanced skills in MS Office Suite (Outlook/Word/Excel/PowerPoint).
  • Demonstrated commitment to continuing professional growth and education.
  • Experience developing planned giving strategies and execution including cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship.
  • Exhibits strong interpersonal skills, empathy and aptitude for working with and understanding the needs and interests of individual donors related to estate planning.
  • Strong collaborator that can motivate colleagues to deliver integrated success through effective project management.
  • Excellent organizational skills, project management and time management skills, with the ability to prioritize a diverse workload and manage a high degree of complexity.
  • Self-motivated, results oriented, with a high level of accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Ability and flexibility to work in a team environment, under time pressure, on some weekends or evenings.
  • Ability to use tact and discretion and maintain confidentiality is mandatory.
  • Strong communicator with exceptional written and verbal communication, judgment and decision making skills.
  • Demonstrated skills in problem solving, analysis, political navigation and professionalism.
