Named after local community activist, Ernestine van Marle, Ernestine’s Women’s Shelter was opened in 1983 by a group of community members who saw a need for a safe place for women and children fleeing violence and abuse. Since its opening, Ernestine’s Women’s Shelter has supported over 15,000 individuals and children.

Today, Ernestine’s is a non-profit organization that provides advocacy, crisis intervention and shelter to Women, Two-Spirit, Trans, Non-binary and Gender Diverse individuals and their children experiencing violence. Their services are evidence-informed and driven by values of inclusion, anti-racism, anti-oppression and respect. Ernestine’s Women’s Shelter seek to interrupt violence through education and advocacy for social justice.

Ernestine’s is a 32-bed emergency shelter with 14 private bedrooms. It provides a home for individuals and their children who stay from six months to over one year (until appropriate housing is found). During their stay, Ernestine’s provides all necessities such as clothing, bedding, school supplies, toiletries, baby supplies, prescriptions not covered by OHIP, loaded Presto cards and anything else that may be needed).

In addition to Shelter, Ernestine’s also offers support to over 600 adults and children from across the Greater Toronto Area through their Outreach Program. Outreach clients have access to counselling services and programs as well as the shelter’s on-site donation rooms and food bank. It also offers a range of holistic services including 24-hour crisis assistance.

Ernestine’s Women’s Shelter are currently recruiting a Manager, Development and Engagement to join their leadership team and work to raise public awareness of Ernestine’s efforts to support survivors of gender-based violence.

You will develop, implement and manage a sustainable, integrated revenue development strategy with the goal of increasing the level of awareness, support, engagement and dollars raised. In addition, you will manage a team of three staff.
