Position Summary

Reporting to the RVH Foundation CEO and managing a team of Donor Advisors (equivalent of major gift officers), the Manager, Donor Advising will drive transformational revenue generation and operational excellence. The Manager, Donor Advising will provide experienced and supportive leadership, with a disciplined commitment to doing the work it takes to achieve big goals, while overseeing precise execution across all aspects of major gifts and planned giving. The Manager, Donor Advising will foster and support a highly effective fundraising team, and successfully cultivate and close gifts at the $250K-plus level. The Manager, Donor Advising will lead by example and leverage the strengths of an outstanding team of passionate Cabinet volunteers who are leaders in the community.

With annual multi-million-dollar team targets, and personal targets greater than $1M, the Manager, Donor Advising, with the support and leadership of the CEO, will manage a personal portfolio of 100 prospects and donors in all stages of the development cycle.  The Manager, Donor Advising will support the work of two Donor Advisors, actively participating in the portfolio management of her/his team, while providing mentorship in donor strategy development, day-to-day activity prioritization, goal setting and progress monitoring.  Responsible for cultivating key donor and stakeholder relationships in a specific geographic area, the Manager, Donor Advising will also cultivate key relationships in major clinical areas within RVH and developing a deep understanding of the clinical work in those areas.  The Manager, Donor Advising will also share responsibility for the support and management of the Campaign Cabinet, ensuring our volunteers are effective and fulfilled in their roles.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership

  • Participate with the CEO and Cabinet Co-Chairs in setting and executing the strategy for major gift and planned giving revenue generation
  • Be fully immersed in RVHF’s organizational and campaign strategies, ensuring that all implementation efforts are strategically linked, and operational focus is consistently true to those strategies
  • Provide effective mentorship, training, encouragement, support, and leadership to direct reports and volunteers in order to ensure collective achievement of annual and long-term financial goals
  • Systematically cultivate long-term, collaborative, strategic relationships that are beneficial to the organization, including those with RVH leaders, Foundation staff, volunteers, donors and community stakeholders
  • Effectively leverage the uncommon enthusiasm and participation of an active, experienced group of campaign volunteers, ensuring that they are engaged and fulfilled in their roles as volunteers
  • Through professionalism, integrity, and accountability, maintain and enhance the credibility of RVH and the RVH Foundation
  • Remain current on issues affecting the philanthropic and voluntary sector and propose strategies to proactively address these issues and opportunities

Management

  • Support CEO in developing strategic and operational development plans and associated budgets; monitor relevant revenue and expense budgets, adjusting plans as required to ensure success
  • Support CEO in managing the affairs of the development team including budgeting, program direction, supervision and evaluation of assigned staff
  • Build, mentor, and retain a high-quality, motivated and fulfilled staff team who are strongly aligned to mission, and who consistently produce results while growing to achieve their own professional potential
  • Provide an open environment the fosters collaboration in problem-solving, idea generation and donor strategy development, providing timely and effective feedback on deliverables and performance
  • Ensure that expectations, goals, objectives and targets for staff and volunteers are clearly communicated and progress is actively monitored and shared, as well as relevant clinical and operational information and updates
  • Support CEO in realigning development operations as needed to facilitate and reinforce the effectiveness of strategic plans, driving for continuous improvement in achieving operational excellence, which may include realigning key processes, team structure, management practices, communications, and the deployment of staff and volunteers
  • Working collaboratively with peer Manager, Donor Advising, provide support in managing the operations of the campaign’s volunteer cabinet and supporting the leadership of the campaign co-chairs
  • Participate in community initiatives to promote the organization and philanthropy
  • Remain abreast of best practices in the fundraising field and general management of development programs

Development and Partnerships

  • Support CEO in planning and developing short- and long-term strategies that are both strategic and tactical in nature in order to support achievement of campaign goals including strategies and approaches to grow and diversify the base of support, particularly amongst seasonal residents who are experienced philanthropists, permanently residing in the GTA
  • Actively manage the major gift pipeline, ensuring that strategies and activity are closely tracked, and reported to ensure cohesion of effort and focus to drive results
  • Working collaboratively with volunteers with shared assignment of prospects, actively manage a personal portfolio of prospects and donors to cultivate, solicit and close gifts
  • Arrange for all supports and follow-up needed to carry out prospect cultivation and solicitation strategies, including meeting and tour arrangements, proposal development, recognition plans and on-going stewardship strategies
  • Cultivate physician and RVH staff relationships with the aim to collaborate in proposal development, donor experience, and grateful patient prospect identification
  • Acquire and maintain a deep understanding of the campaign case for support
  • Relentlessly document actions and meeting notes in database, and effectively leverage systems to ensure exceptional donor experience for assigned portfolio
  • Participate in Foundation and donor events, including those that may fall on evenings and weekends

Community & Collective Engagement

  • Work with other charitable organizations, leaders, senior staff, and/or board members on collaborative projects that further the mission of RVH and RVH Foundation.
  • Act as a goodwill ambassador for the organization to donors and stakeholder groups, and act as a representative or spokesperson of RVH and RVH Foundation when required.
  • Prepare and deliver speeches and presentations to corporations, organizations, business groups, and boards as needed.

Qualifications

Education

  • University degree, college diploma/certificate or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Commitment to life-long learning, CFRE designation encouraged

Experience

  • 7 to 10 years direct experience in major gift fundraising in a hospital foundation environment or similarly complex organization
  • Experience in building a team of effective development professionals with exceptional skills in mentorship, teaching, providing effective feedback and fostering a sense of ownership and accountability
  • Success in closing major gifts, with a strong grasp of all aspects of the gift cycle, from prospect identification, qualification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship
  • Success in skilfully managing a portfolio of high-capacity prospects at all stages of the gift cycle
  • Active and collaborative support of senior volunteer partners
