Feed the Need in Durham is the emergency food distribution hub for the Durham Region.  We work collectively with over 65 hunger relief programs, hundreds of volunteers & thousands of community supporters to procure and distribute over 1.8 million pounds of food annually.  It is our mandate to alleviate hunger by providing fresh, frozen & non-perishable food to the most vulnerable members of our community.

We are an organization that is growing our programs, community outreach and impact and are looking for a leader in digital media and marketing to help take us to the next level!  As our Marketing & Communications Manager, and the leader of a brand-new position within FTND, you will have the exciting opportunity to build a program from the ground up!

 

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES

The Marketing & Communications Manager (Manager) is responsible for overseeing FTND’s annual direct mail & email marketing campaigns, as well as, developing and ensuring consistent coordination of image and messaging across all platforms – internal & external communications, social media, promotional materials, events & website. They are Feed the Need’s master storyteller, shaping the organizations storytelling framework, approaches, and best practices.  As the ‘voice’ of FTND, they must plan and execute professional social and digital communications to support public outreach activities with an emphasis on building brand and mission awareness amongst the public. In collaboration with other members of the development team, they will develop strategies to engage donors using digital platforms as well as monitor, track and establish benchmark metrics.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES

Planning & Preparation

  • In collaboration with the Director of Development & Communications, develop and deploy a full scheduled marketing and communications strategy, including action, awareness, and engagement to drive fundraising goals.
  • Source membership, volunteer, staff, and supporter stories to use in organizational marketing and fundraising materials by conducting internal and community interviews
  • Source individual portraits and video footage of interview subjects to accompany stories in promotional materials (working with an external photographer/videographer if required), maintaining video & image libraries
  • Develop, implement, and manage paid social media and SEM campaigns to drive engagement and reach of FTNDs brand & content and the organizations fundraising goals
  • Work with marketing agency and key stakeholders to rebrand of all company websites and online platforms
  • Refine and manage online branding standards, identifying opportunities and innovative ways of working within those branding guidelines
  • In collaboration with the senior leadership team, drive content development and maintenance, including reviewing existing digital and print content, identifying areas for improvement, researching and creating content, and maintaining consistency across a substantial shelf of material
  • Track and monitor analytics across all platforms, providing quarterly reports and updates, or as required

Website

  • Contribute new ideas for design and content creation to the team using your expertise and eye for cutting-edge design
  • Maintain website content through collaboration with staff and proactively update stats, media centre photos, and video gallery, implementing new pages and content as required
  • Work in collaboration with FTND’s internal team and external stakeholders to conduct persona journey mapping and improve user’s journey
  • Design and develop creative for FTND’s special event and annual campaigns
  • Work with website developer to ensure aesthetics are aligned with usability, AODO and web accessibility standards
  • Generate and maintain digital forms, e-signatures and other on-line requirements for all areas within the organization
  • Track and monitor analytics, providing reports and updates, as requested

Direct Mail & Email Marketing

  • Work along side the Director of Development and Communications to create and oversee FTND Direct Mail and digital fundraising campaigns
  • Implement best practices for email marketing, develop technology to maximize efficiency, improve automation, and leverage it to nurture and engage supporters via ongoing digital interactions and cross-functional channels
  • Build effective target audiences and segments for every message to drive engagement and revenue performance against KPI goals
  • Work in partnership with external agencies to optimize email creative and template structure based on best practices
  • Work with team members to write and create engaging email newsletters through MailChimp
  • Manage in-house e-mail marketing campaigns, including content, newsletters, e-mail database, and CASL / CAN-SPAM compliance

 

Social Media

  • Oversee day-to-day operations of the brand’s social media presence on all platforms, maintaining posting and, updating social media profiles, creating concise, eye-catching, and creative social media posts that engages audience on various social platforms – Instagram, LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook, TikTok, YouTube, and other platforms as needed to drive fundraising revenue.
  • Monitor direct messages and comments across all social media platforms and accounts, responding in a timely manner that is consistent with each brand’s voice. Escalate inquiries to the appropriate internal contact as necessary
  • Planning, execution, and timely digital media coverage of various FTND campaigns and events through the development of a digital media marketing strategy and roadmap
  • Act as the in-house expert on advertising, executing paid digital marketing plans on FTND’s social platforms
  • Working collaboratively with the Director of Development and Communications to build content that engages with key audiences, reinforcing both FTND’s brand positioning and marketing efforts

Media Relations

  • Responsible for building relationships with media outlets
  • Create media pitches and press releases
  • Media list research and development
  • Media monitoring

All other duties as directed by the Director of Development and Communications

INTERNAL/EXTERNAL RELATIONSHIPS

The Marketing Manager reports to the Director of Development and Communications and is responsible for developing and ensuring consistent coordination of image and messaging across all platforms.  This this role requires collaboration across all aspects of the organization.  While external relationships will be built with media outlets, government agencies, community stakeholders, and donors, the extent of the public reach is truly limitless.

KEY COMPETENCIES AND SKILLS

  • Dynamic, and creative with strong communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to write and present information in a clear, compelling, and concise manner to a variety of audiences across multiple channels
  • Sound project management skills, ability to assess situations to determine importance, urgency and risk, ability to think creatively to solve challenges in a timely manner and in the best interest of Feed the Need in Durham
  • An ability to move between strategy and execution with demonstrated willingness to work collaboratively within cross-functional teams
  • Analytical, big picture, and strategic problem solver focused on results and continuous improvement
  • Inherent understanding of writing for a target audience(s) and with specific marketing campaign objectives in mind
  • A self-starter who can work in a fast-paced environment with a high volume of projects, meet tight deadlines and achieve results
  • Experience sourcing and managing content development, possesses excellent writing skills and the ability to build creative and engaging content
  • Thorough understanding of KPI’s, tracking engagement, and SEO to optimize campaign content

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Marketing, Communications, Digital Marketing, or a related field
  • 5+ years relevant social media, communications, and/or marketing experience
  • Experience developing, implementing, executing, and assessing strategic digital plans that align with and support other organizational strategies and priorities
  • Knowledge of Facebook’s ad manager platform, along with an understanding of Google analytics and how to leverage data to continually optimize campaigns and improve results
  • Experience with the following: Website development, graphic design & video editing, PowerPoint, Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Twitter, and more.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Feed the Need in Durham values the contributions of their staff and treasures their ability to plan, work, laugh and grow together as a team. This position is a full-time, salaried position at 37.5 hrs a week with daily on-site hours scheduled by management in accordance with operational requirements. The Marketing Manager works with other members of the team in an open concept office located at 371 Marwood Dr in Oshawa.  Work is mainly performed in the office environment with occasional off-site visits. It is understood that it may be necessary for the position at times to work irregular hours/days to ensure that the objectives of the organization are being met. Valid Driver’s licence and access to a vehicle considered an asset.
