A Day in the Life…

Reporting to the Director, Development and Stewardship, the Senior Manager, Principal and Planned Gifts is responsible for securing individual gifts with a focus on gifts of $250,000 and above. By identifying and building long term donor partnerships, the Senior Manager will successfully meet/exceed their annual and multi-year fundraising goals, while serving as a key member of the integrated University Advancement and External Relations team and working to deliver exceptional results for the University.

As the Senior Manager, Principal and Planned Gifts, you will:

  • Build and manage a portfolio of legacy donors and prospects of 125 – 150;
  • Prepare targeted marketing materials and donor specific correspondence;
  • Develop and manages timelines for various fundraising activities to ensure plans and critical fundraising processes are carried out in a timely manner;
  • Deliver on annual and multi-year fundraising and performance targets and goals;
  • Build and cultivate relationships with alumni, key community stakeholders, and members of the community, with a focus on building partnerships and relationships in support of the university;
  • Cultivate relationships with qualified prospective donors and professional advisors to increase, solicit, and close charitable gifts to the University;
  • Develop and implement plans for securing major gifts and deferred gifts from donors through estate planning and other types of gifts;
  • Manage and implement an action plan for increasing new funds and planned gifts through targeted mailings, events/seminars, stewardship and related activities;
  • Liaise with the prospect research team to develop briefing materials to individuals attending donor meetings;
  • Ensure that proper recognition and stewardship practices are implemented based on the level of donation and gift direction;
  • Identify opportunities for the President and Vice-Chancellor, the Associate Vice-President Advancement and External Relations, the Provost, Deans and other University representatives to participate in development activities;
  • Participate in long term strategic planning for University Advancement and External Relations and faculties where appropriate including working on team preparing for multi-year campaign;
  • Provide leadership to direct reports including managing, coaching, mentoring and motivating;
  • Provide guidance to staff on building relationships to increase donations and improve University connections;
  • Ensure staff compliance with all University policies including FIPPA, AODA, Health & Safety, Respectful Work and Learning Environment, etc.

What you need to Succeed…

  • An undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline;
  • 5 – 7 years of major gifts ($250,000+), planned giving experience (preferably in an educational institution) with a successful track record in building the principal and planned giving portfolios and a proven track record of securing gifts at all levels, with a focus on 6 – 7 figures and above;
  • Comprehensive understanding of Planned Giving principles and strategies with a thorough understanding of University-level education and the philanthropic environment in Ontario, Canada, and internationally;
  • Strong understanding of relational databases and reporting;
  • Experience with Raiser’s Edge NXT database or a similar fundraising database;
  • Knowledge of estate planning, including wills, trusts and estate and gift tax laws, deferred giving vehicles and tax laws related to charitable giving;
  • Knowledge of legal recordkeeping requirements for fundraising and documenting donations;
  • Solid computer competency including word processing, spreadsheet, database, social media, and internet search engines;
  • Ability to keep up to date with legislation, collective agreements, and internal policies, procedures and practices;
  • Highly developed written and oral communication skills as well as face-to-face relationship building skills; and exceptional presentation skills;
  • Ability to represent Brock University to government officials at every level and influence decisions/outcomes;
  • Conflict resolution skills with the ability to communicate tactfully and diplomatically;
  • Team player with the proven ability to build strong relationships and influence individuals at all levels of an organization, as well as external constituents;
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills and ability to prioritize workload in a fast-paced environment with changing deadlines;
  • Strong research, judgement, creative, analytical, and problem solving skills.

Preferred or Asset Skills:

  • Reliable means of transportation to visit prospects;
  • Certified Fund-Raising Executive (CFRE) certification;
  • Completion of the CAGP-ACPDP’s Advanced Canadian Gift Planning course.

Salary and Benefit Information

  • Target Hiring Range: $80,000-$95,000*
  • Job Grade O, $76,374- $108,762*
  • This position includes full comprehensive benefits, plus tuition waiver.
