  1. General Background

  1. Purpose and Scope of Assignment

Reporting to the Assistant Private Sector Partnership (PSP) Officer – Marketing and Communications and in close coordination with the Senior Fundraising Communications Associate, the Assistant PSP Officer for Individual Giving and the UNHCR Canada Public Information Unit, the Social Media and Digital Content Associate will be responsible for supporting the implementation of UNHCR communications strategy in Canada through our digital platforms. This includes managing the national website and social media accounts including:

  • ca (1,100,000 sessions in 2020)
  • Social media channels with 139,519 followers in total across the following platforms:
    • Facebook (58,808 followers)
    • Twitter (37,644 followers)
    • LinkedIn (23,6159 followers)
    • YouTube (5,850 subscribers)
    • Instagram 11,916followers)
    • TikTok (2,398 followers)
    • Medium (54 followers)

Responsibility

The Social Media and Digital Content Associate will be responsible for executing our communication strategy, producing content, and posting content across those channels. The scope of the role includes the following:

A. Accountability (key results that will be achieved)

  • Support the implementation of UNHCR Canada communications strategy;
  • Accurately and promptly produce, edit, and post content to engage key audiences for UNHCR Canada to social media and website;
  • Act as the focal point for the management of UNHCR Canada website and all social media channels and coordinate all content contributors to ensure the timely, accurate, and relevant publishing of content;
  • Utilizing Google Analytics, Engaging Networks, and social media tools to monitor core key performance indicators (KPIs) for channels and campaigns, producing weekly, monthly, and quarterly reports to optimize efforts to reach better

KPIs include:

  • Email list size
  • Open, click and unsubscribe rate for email newsletters
  • Number of followers and engagement index on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram, Medium, TikTok, YouTube, and SoundCloud
  • Website views, page engagement, and bounce rates (shared with Individual Giving team)
  • Website conversion rate (shared with Individual Giving team)
  • Donor Satisfaction (Net Promoter Score)
  • Ensure technical effectiveness of the website (SEO, accessibility, load times, device responsiveness, back-ups) (shared with Individual Giving team

B. Responsibility (processes and functions undertaken to achieve results)

  • Repurpose global content and produce original content for the website/social media and support the fundraising program with other content requirements as needed;
  • Manage an SEO vendor to ensure all content on the site and the site overall is optimized for organic search rankings; (shared with the Individual Giving team)
  • Liaise with the fundraising team to ensure content is optimized for fundraising including optimizing site conversion rates, ensuring recognition of key fundraising partners, and ensuring support for all campaigns;
  • Liaise with key stakeholders to ensure processes/procedures are adhered to, content is up to date, and uploaded to UNHCR communication channels;
  • Serve as Canadian focal point with UNHCR global social media team
  • Make daily posts to social media channels to increase engagement and traffic generation to the website;
  • Respond to comments, messages, and posts on social media from donors,
  • Identify and engage social influencers, maintain social media community standards to build an active social community for UNHCR Canada;
  • Manage a paid Facebook and Instagram content budget (boosted posts) to ensure optimal engagement;
  • Support the technical infrastructure of the website, WordPress backend, domain management, hosting, regular backups, and health checks;
  • Work with internal stakeholders to ensure the website is current in both English and French;
  • Produces and analyses report to make optimum recommendations to increase the value of search engines (SEO); (shared with Individual Giving team)
  • Provides monthly reports on social media metrics and top-performing posts
  • Support content coordination, ensuring cohesiveness in UNHCR Canada’s message and brand integrity across channels (i.e. website, social media, fundraising channels);
  • Input into the continued development of UNHCR’s communication strategy in Canada as required;

  1. Monitoring and Progress Control
  • UNHCR website and social media platforms are continuously optimised to ensure content is effective, relevant, and engaging to digital audiences.
  • An increased awareness of UNHCR among audiences, translating into an increased traffic to the UNHCR´s digital platforms and an increased and stable response to UNHCR’s call to action
  1. Qualifications and Experience

a. Education & Work Experience

  • Completion of secondary education with post-secondary training/certificate from an accredited college or university
  • A minimum of five years of working experience in the areas of digital communications is required;
  • Experience in writing engaging, compelling, creative copy for digital channels
  • Experience with technical website management, use of CMS platforms (WordPress, Drupal), and optimizing website performance
  • Experience running national social media accounts
  • Experience in Google Analytics, tracking and tagging systems or similar tools
  • Experience with traffic generation, including SEO/SEM, is desirable
  • Experience with paid social content posts
  • Experience creating and managing influencer marketing campaigns
  • Experience with software for audio-visual editing (e.g. Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and Premiere) is required
  • Working knowledge of HTML and CSS is an asset
  • Ability to interpret and analyse complex issues and represent such information in a clear and concise written manner for private sector audiences
  • Ability to adhere to tight deadlines and manage projects simultaneously with independence
  • Ability to exercise discretion and maintain confidentiality required
  • Experience managing vendors and freelancers

  • Proven ability to write communication materials;
  • Proven experience with digital community management including social networks;
  • Knowledge of web tracking mechanisms and analytics platforms such as Google Analytics and social media tracking tools;
  • Excellent analytical, written and verbal skills in English;
  • Experience with digital image/video editing tools (e.g. Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and Premiere);
  • Experience with traffic generation, including SEO/SEM is desirable;
  • Experience with technical website management, use of CMS platforms (WordPress, Drupal) and optimizing website
  • Working knowledge of HTML and CSS;
  • Acute attention to detail
  • Must be eligible to work in Canada

Desirable:

  • Professional experience within the non-for-profit sector, UN agencies or international institutions
  • Knowledge of CMS and email communications tools
  • Proficiency or ability to communicate in French or another second language
5. Additional information:

a. Approximate net monthly salary range: CAD $ 4,074.92 – CAD $ 4,831.92

    • The final salary step within this range is determined based on experience and education following the       established criteria for step allocation.
    • Tax payment will be under the direct responsibility of the contractor. UNOPS contracts are not tax exempted

b. Benefits:

  • 5 annual leave days accumulative and 2 sick leave days per month in addition to UN statutory holidays.

c. Recruitment process:
