Osler is about to embark on a campaign to build a multi-story in-patient tower on the Peel Memorial Site.

Leadership
Shelagh Barry
This role reports to the newly appointed Senior Vice President, Philanthropy, Shelagh Barry. Shelagh joined Osler Foundation nearly 10 years ago and has been a key player in transforming Osler Foundation’s approach to fundraising and event management. Her ascent to this role comes after a series of significant contributions in various leadership positions, showcasing her unwavering commitment and innovative fundraising mindset. Under Shelagh’s guidance, Osler Foundation is poised for an exciting new chapter ahead.
Ken Mayhew
The Foundation President & CEO, Ken Mayhew is a dynamic and highly respected senior fundraising executive with a passion for cultivating donors who share Osler’s commitment to deliver exceptional health care close to home. Through his exemplary leadership, Osler Foundation has experienced continuous revenue growth, recently exceeding its $100M campaign goal by $9M to support redevelopment and ongoing equipment needs at Osler’s Brampton Civic Hospital, Etobicoke General Hospital and Peel Memorial Centre for Integrated Health and Wellness.
Prior to joining Osler in 2012, Ken spent 20 years with the MS Society of Canada where he was responsible for all aspects of marketing, communications, media and fund development for a program with almost one million active donors, raising over $50M annually.
An active and passionate volunteer, Ken is immediate Past Chair of the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) Canada. He is also Past President of the local AFP chapter. Ken’s ongoing involvement with AFP, Imagine Canada and the Rideau Hall Foundation includes government relations and media work to profile the importance of philanthropy as an enabler of Canada’s robust and inclusive social fabric. He is a frequent sector spokesperson and has been featured in numerous podcasts, panels, interviews, and media pieces.
Among his many honours, Ken has been recognized with a CEO in Action award from the Diversity Journal for his work in inclusive board and fundraising development. He was named 2019 Fundraiser of the Year by AFP Toronto and in 2022 became a Paul Harris Fellow—the highest award in Rotary, given to a member of the public who has made an outstanding contribution to the community. Ken’s career and transformational impact at Osler is featured in Peter Mansbridge’s current national bestselling book ‘How Canada Works – The People Who Make Our Nation Thrive’.

Location: Hybrid. Minimum 2 days on site with focus on team building and collaboration with key stakeholders: 20 Lynch Street, Brampton, ON (Wednesday is the ‘anchor’ day)
Compensation: $160,000 – $180,000 with an annual variable incentive, comprehensive benefits, HOOPP pension and vacation package

The Role
The Vice President, Philanthropy will assist the Senior Vice-President, Philanthropy, and the President & CEO to define, create and manage the overall strategic fundraising plan that will enable William Osler Health System Foundation to realize aggressive growth goals while maintaining a long-term donor-centred approach. Our successful candidate, in partnership with leadership will set annual budgets and objectives, establish and implement strategies to reach these objectives and will be responsible for the ongoing evaluation of these initiatives.
The Vice President, Philanthropy will provide the leadership needed to further advance high performing major gift and community giving programs overseeing the identification, cultivation and solicitation of individuals, corporations and foundations and personally soliciting prospects for major and planned gifts, specifically, gifts above $100,000, and assisting with facilitating the President’s and Senior Vice-President’s efforts to secure transformational gifts.
The Vice President, Philanthropy will develop strategies to inspire those who may not have a history of philanthropic giving and demonstrate the impact their gift and philanthropic involvement can have on the community. Culturally aware, highly strategic and a genuine relationship builder, the Vice President, Philanthropy, alongside the SVP and President & CEO co-lead the design and execution of the major gift pipeline for Osler’s upcoming campaign. A proven and inspiring people leader, our successful candidate will inherit a high performing and dedicated philanthropic team. A coach, with an inclusion mindset, our Vice President will inspire the best from the team by leading by example.
The Vice President, Philanthropy will be comfortable working with senior level volunteers and Board members and coaching them around the art of the ask. They will be at ease with diverse operational styles and will excel at developing and leveraging strong relationships with senior stakeholders.
Primary Responsibilities
- Is committed to the Mission, Vision, and Values of William Osler Health System and the Foundation
- Is responsible for the Foundation’s consistent achievement of philanthropic revenue objectives (the Foundation achieved $21M in annual revenue most recently)
Strategic & Operational Leadership
- Plan, manage and implement the strategic and operation plans for all philanthropic revenue streams, in collaboration with the President & CEO, Senior Vice-President, Philanthropy and the philanthropy program managers
- Work with the philanthropy program managers to ensure full integration and coordination of their programs to maximize donor engagement and fundraising results
- In partnership with leadership determine appropriate goals, targets and metrics to ensure that all philanthropic fundraising efforts are effective, efficient, and successful
- Monitor and report on the progress towards these goals and targets, and on the activity and results of fundraising programs, initiatives, and staff giving
- Actively recruit, onboard and manage volunteer committees in support of our events
- Ensure that all fundraising programs and activities fall within ethical, fiscal, and legal
standards, and within Foundation policies and regulations
- Contribute to the development of the Foundation’s annual revenue and associated costs budget
Integrated Fundraising Planning & Management
- Work with the team on stewardship, where the focus is around strategic donor-centred cultivation in order to realize increased current and lifetime support
- Work with the Associate Director, Community Giving on strategies to better integrate the Community Giving activities with other fundraising/donor programs and to streamline and grow the Third Party Events revenue stream
- In partnership with colleagues, devise and integrate strategies to reach diverse communities representing many ethnocultural groups and constituencies
- Cross functional strategic support to the Marketing and Communications team in their production of direct mail and digital campaigns
Campaign Strategy & Major Gifts Fundraising
- Contribute to the development of appropriate campaign support for the three Osler facilities
- Lead a rigorous focus on building the major gifts prospect pipeline by assisting in developing prospect identification and engagement strategies for new donors to the Foundation
- Actively manage a portfolio of major gift prospects in support of campaign projects and other ongoing needs
- Strategize with the Foundation President & CEO, Senior Vice-President, Philanthropy, other Foundation team members, and with volunteers when appropriate, on the approaches to major gifts prospects
- Provide support, mentoring, coaching and encouragement to Foundation staff, Board
members, and volunteers who are involved in major gift fundraising
Communications & Donor Relations
- Develop strategies and work with Foundation colleagues to ensure effective stewardship is implemented across all donors
- Lead the development of stewardship strategies, plans, and practices for all donor levels
Collaborate closely with William Osler Hospital Communications colleagues in the development of key communication materials to support philanthropy and stewardship activities, and to ensure alignment on all key messages
Collaborative Relationship Building
- Maintain ongoing positive relationships with new and existing donors, volunteers, and
community members
- Develop and maintain effective working relationships with physician, clinicians, and staff within the William Osler Health System
- Identify key physicians, clinicians, and senior staff to act as Foundation ambassadors and to help develop and solicit major gift prospects
- Identify opportunities for and lend support to activities with Osler Health System colleagues (i.e. physicians, administrative leadership) that help to build awareness of the Foundation and to foster a culture of philanthropy
- Provide guidance, training, and support to any volunteers or hospital staff who serve as
partners in fundraising activities
- Maintain relationships with other healthcare philanthropy professionals to ensure ongoing
knowledge of best practices and to benchmark the Foundation’s performance
Team Leadership & Management
- Inspire, direct, and manage philanthropy staff who work at multiple hospital sites on a hybrid/work from home basis
- Direct staff reports include the Associate Director, Major Gifts, the Senior Manager, Donor Experience, and their respective teams
- Oversee the recruitment and retention of philanthropy staff including hiring, performance management, accountability and annual reviews, and professional development
- Engage every member of the team in working collaboratively towards the integration of programs and activities in support of our overall collective goals
- Encourage staff to combine best practices with creativity and new ways of approaching problems and opportunity
- Work with staff to develop and achieve performance goals, targets, and metrics for their programs and revenue streams, and for themselves and their individual team members
Qualifications
Our ideal candidate will possess/have:
- A proven track record of to mentoring and motivating staff and volunteers
- Exceptional interpersonal skills, commitment to excellence and a balanced work ethic
- A minimum of 8-10 years major and planned giving experience ideally having supported a campaign in a large health care or academic setting
- Demonstrated ability to prioritize competing demands, meet deadlines and work collegially in a team setting
- A professional and superior client-service approach
- Excellent project management, prioritization and organizational skills
- Outstanding leadership and communication skills; demonstrated results oriented approach
- University or continuing education in relevant field
- CFRE designation preferred, plus involvement in a professional association
- A proven track record of major and planned gift success
- A proven ability to work in a complex organization and receptive to change
- Valid driver’s license required
