Beyond Generosity
Black Leaders Redefining Philanthropy in Canada and The Black Canadian Fundraisers Collective
Join AFP GTC in conversation with the Black Canadian Fundraisers Collective (BCFC) for a vital Black Philanthropy Month event. This panel will explore the global and local dynamics of anti-Blackness in the philanthropic sector and highlight the emergence of Black-led initiatives reshaping the field.
Together, panelists Nadia Ahidjo, Camila Pereira, and Chantelle Ohrling will discuss how racism manifests both externally—through a lack of funding to Black-led organizations—and internally, as Black professionals face tone policing, erasure, and exclusion within Canadian charities. Framing these challenges through the values of Ubuntu and Sankofa, we will ground this discussion in Black feminist thought and the traditions of collective care and resistance.
This event also spotlights the transformative work of BCFC, including the Black Charities Academy, the Birgit Smith Burton RISE Fund, and the Black Philanthropy Fund. Learn how Black fundraisers are building communities of care, advocating for structural change, and cultivating spaces for freedom and belonging.
Whether you’re a sector leader, emerging fundraiser, or ally committed to equity, this session offers space to listen, reflect, and take action.
