How Cancer Made Me a Fundraiser

This talk tells the story of how one person—with no background in fundraising—launched and scaled a successful third-party event while fighting for their life. It’s about what can happen when someone with a personal mission is met with the right kind of support.

Marc didn’t set out to become a fundraiser. He writes code for a living. But his cancer diagnosis compelled him to build something for his community. And he was only able to do it because someone said yes—offering trust, encouragement, and room to grow.

This talk is for fundraising professionals who don’t always see the ripple effects of their work. It’s a reminder that what you do matters. That your support can change everything. Because sometimes, all it takes is saying yes to an idea someone is just brave enough to believe in.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Learn how to support third-party event organizers as they navigate personal and logistical challenges.
  • Understand how lived experience and storytelling can fuel authentic and effective community fundraising.
  • Recognize the lasting impact of small acts of support from fundraising professionals.
