Associate Director Prospect Research
DEPARTMENT SUMMARY
St.Michael’sHospitalFoundation (SMHF) is the exclusive fundraising organization to generate and manage philanthropic funds for St. Michael’s Hospital and Providence Healthcare, within Unity Health Toronto. Through multiple lines of fundraising income generation and stewardship activity, SMHF, in conjunction with Unity Health will define and promote the St. Michael’s and Providence brands to maximize philanthropic revenue to fuel their healthcare, research, teaching and health equity missions. We will inspire our communities, local, provincial, national and international, to invest in our organizations’ priorities to drive and implement innovation that will equitably support all members of our society to manage and overcome disease and health crises and live healthier lives to create a more inclusive and thriving society.
POSITION SUMMARY
Working closely in partnership with fundraisers, volunteers and various levels of Hospital stakeholders, the Associate Director, Prospect Research (AD/PR) will play three roles:
1) Lead SMHF’s prospect research strategy and operation;
2) Lead and execute pipeline management for the Principal and Major Gifts teams; and
3) Provide direct prospect research support to the Foundation.
The incumbent will bring an analytical and proactive approach to identifying, researching, evaluating and providing analyses, assessment, and recommendations on prospective donors and volunteers in order to determine capacity, inclination and interest to support St. Michael’s Hospital Foundation in alignment with the fundraising priorities. Through this work the AD/PR will help fundraisers make informed decisions to engage, cultivate and solicit gifts from prospects and ensure a strong base of future giving support for the Hospital.
RESPONSIBILITIES & ACTIVITIES
Responsibility | Prospect Research & Development |
Activities: Support fundraising teams through the development of innovative strategies and design of a highly strategic and proactive information services unit including standard research products, procedures and guidelines. Design and execute research strategies in investigating and analyzing complex forms of information for the development of comprehensive and strategic prospect research reports to support fundraising activities. Support an information-driven culture by deriving conclusions and identifying trends through statistical analysis of internal and external data.· Develop best practice and ensure a high level of data quality and integrity in Raiser’s Edge through timely and accurate data entry, record maintenance and prospect tracking. Lead prospect qualification by compiling and synthesizing data from a variety of sources including key variables used in assessment. Continuously monitor prospects in the pipeline and provide relevant and timely information and analysis that will positively move prospect relationships forward. Design and complete special prospect research projects. These requests may relate to market intelligence, fundraising, donor engagement, or other research as required. Activities: In conjunction with the AVP, Major Gifts:· Devise strategies for obtaining new prospects through the design and implementation of innovative prospect identification methodologies to support fundraising activities. Lead prospect clearance and prospect management to ensure alignment and strong cohorts of prospects at all stages of the development cycle. Prepare prospect briefing and activity reports and oversee tracking and data integrity for fundraisers’ assigned portfolios. Work with fundraisers to develop prospect cultivation and solicitation information and strategies and ensure a strong base of future giving for the Hospital. Maximize and evolve the donor management system, including the implementation of workflows, to create data-driven prospect reports and strategies. Lead the monitoring and communication of relevant news, events and issues that impact fundraising and economic trends and health developments. Develop prospect research and prospect management best practices by keeping up-to-date with developments and trends. |

Activities: Manage and analyze large datasets to extract meaningful insights related to donor behavior, giving trends, and campaign performance.· In collaboration with the Data team, develop and maintain data models and dashboards to assist fundraising teams in making informed decisions. |
Responsibility | Planning & Communications |
Activities: Support the Foundation’s strategic planning by gathering, disseminating and updating demographic data and information about trends in Healthcare and Philanthropy for regular use in presentations, reports and other communications. Assist in the preparation of an annual plan of measurable goals and strategies (including precise and practical deadlines), to maximize campaign operations to the organization.Provide input that can be incorporated into the overall Foundation annual and longer – term plans. Work with colleagues to plan and execute communications for donor cohorts. |

- Minimum of an undergraduate University degree.
- Ten (10) or more years of experience in prospect research and pipeline management, or in a research and analytical role.
- Demonstrated experience turning data and information into actionable insights that inform donor strategy.
- Exceptional analytical abilities as well as project management skills and experience executing and/or contributing to organization-wide change management initiatives.
- Demonstrated experience in implementing an effective electronic screening, performing proactive/reactive research and prospect management system with a strong major gift program.
- Demonstrated independence and resourcefulness, while working within the framework of a team-oriented environment, all while being curious and inquisitive with an appetite to learn.
- Strong understanding of philanthropic giving and donor engagement principles, along with deep experience in traditional and emerging prospect identification and management processes.
- Demonstrated experience in providing analysis and effective prospect strategies in partnership with fundraisers and volunteers.
- Demonstrated ability to design relevant reporting mechanisms for prospect and pipeline management.
- Superior writing, verbal and presentation skills.
- Demonstrated professionalism in handling highly sensitive and confidential information ethically and with discretion.
- A collaborative and service oriented attitude, comfortable working independently and as part of a team, and with all levels of staff and volunteers.
- Superior computer skills. Raiser’s Edge database experience is highly desirable.
- Familiarity with Power BI an asset.
- Demonstrated ability to handle multiple priorities and be self-motivated and resourceful in a high pressure and demanding work environment.
- Proven ability to exercise diplomacy and good judgment.
- Demonstrated commitment to and understanding of the mission and values of St. Michael’s Hospital.
