ORGANIZATION SUMMARY
St. Michael’s and Providence Foundation (SMPF) is the exclusive fundraising organization to generate and manage philanthropic funds for St. Michael’s Hospital and Providence Healthcare, within Unity Health Toronto. Through multiple lines of fundraising income generation and stewardship activity, SMPF, in conjunction with Unity Health, will define and promote the St. Michael’s and Providence brands to maximize philanthropic revenue to fuel their healthcare, research, teaching and health equity missions. POSITION SUMMARY
The Director, Human Resources provides strategic and operational HR leadership to support a high-performing, values-driven organization. Reporting to the Chief of Staff, the Director will develop and implement people strategies that align with the Foundation’s mission, growth objectives, and commitment to equity, inclusion, and employee well-being.
This role oversees the People and Culture portfolio, including talent acquisition, employee experience, performance management, compensation, learning and development, HR policies and procedures, and compliance with Ontario employment legislation. This role will work with the human resources team at the Hospital to execute all functional HR aspects for the Foundation.
RESPONSIBILITIES & ACTIVITIES
Talent Management:
- Execute the Talent Management Framework.
- Lead recruitment, onboarding, and retention strategies to attract diverse, high-calibre talent.
- Partner with leaders in workforce planning, succession planning, and role design.
- Ensure hiring practices align with equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility principles.
Employee Relations and Performance Management:
- Foster a positive, inclusive, and high-performance workplace culture.
- Oversee performance management processes, coaching leaders on feedback, goal-setting, and development.
- Manage employee relations matters with professionalism, confidentiality, and sound judgment.
Total Compensation:
- Oversee compensation frameworks, benefits programs, and recognition initiatives.
- Ensure competitiveness within the nonprofit and healthcare fundraising sector.
- Manage relationships with external HR service providers and partners (ie. Hospital).
- Execute payroll submissions.
- Development of the annual salary and at-risk compensation budget.
Learning and Development:
- Develop and execute leadership training, and professional growth opportunities.
- Lead employee engagement initiatives, surveys, and action planning.
- Promote employee wellness, mental health, and work-life balance.
Policy Compliance:
- Develop, update and oversee HR policies and procedures.
- Ensure compliance with Ontario employment legislation, health and safety regulations, and best practices.
- Support labour relations as applicable and manage HR-related risk.
HR Operations and Systems:
- Oversee HR systems, data, and reporting to support informed decision-making.
- Manage the HR budget and ensure operational efficiency.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor’s degree in human resources, business administration, or a related field; CHRP/CHRL designation required.
- Minimum 8–10 years of progressive HR experience, including leadership responsibilities.
- Experience in the nonprofit, healthcare, or public sector preferred.
- Strong knowledge of Ontario employment law and HR best practices.
- Demonstrated ability to build trust, influence leaders, and manage complex issues.
- Strategic thinking and sound judgment.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.

- High degree of professionalism, integrity, and discretion.
