Fundraising events play a significant role in supporting and sustaining not-for-profit organizations. Often, they are a considerable revenue source to fund their programs. However, event management can also be very stressful for the organizers, and there is often a lot at stake for the not-for-profit to be successful.
This workshop takes a project management approach to event planning. It will allow for several open discussions and provide the participants with many valuable tips and templates to better prepare them for running their next event.
The curriculum guides the participants through the four stages of any event:
- Initiation – how to create the event within the context of the organization’s strategic goals. It will include:
- Creating a theme
- Setting realistic fundraising goals
- Resource requirements and volunteer opportunities
- Creating a realistic budget
- Planning – how to plan for a marketing and communication strategy and organizing the event. Participants will be able to explore ideas on all aspects of event planning.
- Event promotion
- Venue selection and supplier management
- Internal event coordination and resources
- Sponsorship and donor management
- Ongoing budget control
- Risk management and contingency planning
- Execution – how to run the actual event and deal with the unexpected. Running the event requires a detailed schedule to give participants the promised experience.
- Venue and/or system readiness
- Resource scheduling and contingency planning
- Following through on the event agenda
- Considerations for event follow-up and planning for next time
